Default 1999 Disco 2 Trans puzzle

Hi all, DISCO noob here.. Wondering if the crowd had any thoughts on this:

Recently bought 1999 1/2 Disco 2. Well cared for, supposedly owned for most of it's life by a LR Tech. ( OME 2" lift, PIAA fog lights, added. )

Vehicle has (appears to have) a manual valve body for 1st gear, which requires starting in '1' on the gear selector from stop or under 10mph.

(first I heard of this for offroad, not street racing, but it makes sense I guess.)

Anyhow, the tranny works fine, except that when accelerator is fully depressed on an INCLINE, the motor races, and loses contact with drivetrain. If you SHIFT it manually to '3', no problem, everything engages and functions as expected.

Felt like TC fluid level to me, but all fluid levels are normal...

Thoughts on what may be happening here . Related? Thanks in advance

I NEVER buy cars from mechanics, they never work on their own cars, they work on cars for a living the last thing they want to do after they get home is work on another car, for free no less.

Change the trans fluid and filter and report back.

Nope. Not a manual valve body. Transmission is toast.

HAHAHAHAHAA you should see my Audi TT! I haven't washed it in about 3 years. It needs a radiator and starts getting hot at idle. Someone smashed BOTH my quarter panels. Someone put a trailer hitch through my grill. both headlights are so hazy they look like dead fish eyes. I have 4 bald tires. The entire hatch is filled with clothes/toys iv'e been meaning to drop off at the salvation army for 8 months.

A mechanics car is really "the shoemakers children's shoes".

Have you checked the fluid for level as well as color, is it brown and smell burned? Better yet do you know how to check the fluid, Make sure the engine is running when you open the fill plug.
Do you have a check engine light on, if so what are the exact fault code numbers?

LOL!!!!
All of my mechanics friends cars are the same way, their "toys" are immaculate, but their daily driver is, well, special.
You could fix your hot idle with a $3 toggle switch, hazy headlights with toothpaste, tires from a customer who bought a new set, grill for free or close to it...but yet you dont because after you get home from work you dont want to work any more, I'm the same way, I dont want to work for free either.

The above comments are very true. All of the mechanics that I know, with the exception of one, have always driven poorly maintained and poorly cared for vehicles.
