1999 Discovery II lost key replacement
I recently lost the only key for my 1999 Discovery II. Do the keys have an immobilizer chip that need programming? Im wondering if I can just go to a locksmith and get a metal key cut out.
Plain metal key will work just fine. I never had a fob for my '99. However, you should replace the lock pin inside the driver's door if you're going to rely on that as your only means of access to the vehicle. Carrs4x4 sell an upgraded version, and you can find several discussion threads on this forum detailing the reasons why this is something to do sooner rather than later.
I cut keys here at the shop. I can verify 100% it's easier to cut older one sided keys vs the Rover double sided key. My key cutter is the old school hardware store manual machine. I've botched more double sided keys than I've succeeded. Luckily there's enough play in the old disco 2 barrels and my old yota that I don't need them perfect. As for the common door/deadbolt and master lock keys, I have zero issues getting those right 99.9% of the time.
For programming the disco 2 key fob I use a cheap 79 dollar Chinese obd2 two way blue tooth dondle
