Default 1st time disco owner - 1996

Morning,

Just picked up a 1996 Disco with 110K for some short change and overall VERY pleased...engine runs well, tranny is SO smooth and the susp, exhaust, brakes are all new. With that said, with all used cars I like to do an engine flush, coolant flush and replace with new fluids. Any tips/hints, must do MODS or NO NO's..etc. for a new owner. Great forum and thanks

Take your time on doing the mods, get it out off the road with some other 4by's and see how it performs and slowly start with the changes or you may land up with something that doesn't work the way you want it to.
As for the flush, do two over the next two oil changes using any of the engine flushes you can buy at the auto parts store. Buy K&N 3001 oil filters and consider running Castrol 20/50W oil.
As for the fluids,
2 Gallons of coolant
7 quarts of a good 80/90W gear oil for the diffs and t/case
1 quart of power steering fluid and one bottle of Lucas power steering additive
2 quarts of brake fluid for a good brake flush
6 quarts of Dextron ATF for a tranny fluid change
3 bottles of Seafoam gas additive to decarbon the engine
If you are ready to do a tune up, get back to us and I'll give you a list.
Good luck,
Mike

That sounds like good advice for any of us with older Discoverys (mines a '99 Series I). I wouldn't mind that tune up list...

I have found 15w50 and 20w50 oil to thick for my Disco.
But what ever you do try a high mileage oil it will help stop
the small oil leaks.

For the 1996 Disco I run the champion RN11YCC spark plugs idles and
runs very good with the plugs. (they are OEM)
I use the 8mm magnecor plug wires.

The Disco I has a fuel filter.

When you change the antifreeze you can get a cleaner/stop leak to put in,
not a lot just a little the Disco I's have head gaskets made of paper (thin) and leak
just a little in the front of the heads.
You will hear the antifreeze on the right side of the dash until all the air is
out of the system.

The transmission will hold 4 qts to 4 1/2 qts max.

You only want to use Castrol Brake fluid the GT/LMA.
That will keep the brake seals happy.

I just turned 100,000 miles to day on mine, so little time so many
places to go and what better way than a Land Rover!!

Mike
