I read where a guy replaced his 4.0 with a 4.6. I think the only thing he had to change was going to a D2 knock sensor fo clearance. It still had the 4.0 heads, intake and ECU. I'll see if I can find it again.

got it.... http://home.twcny.rr.com/eeibooks/rover/engine.htm
Thanks for looking that up okdiscoguy, it's given me some ideas for things I was thinking about doing....
Just a thought, but if you want a 4.6, I was just looking around for mine and I found this....

Excellent! I guess that would do the job. Thanks for passing it on.At $4100 though it would beclose totwice what I paid for my Disco though LOL! I figured there would be something from the UK that would work. I know www.rimmerbros.co.uk sell hi performance rover motors that go all the way up to 5.2L @ 310hp/350ft/lbs, that will fit the distributor vehicles. I wasactually just speculating what my options would be when my motor does finally die? Which hopefully should be a long way off. It still seems tight and since I cleaned out my oil pan & pick up tube, has good oil pressure, which was what made methink about a "new" motor in the 1st place. I did see a complete 4.6 on Craigslist in Austin for $150 (rod knock)I was thinking of buying to rebuild. So this was when I started seriously wondering about the 4.6 option.

be wary of a "rod knock" in these. They are notorious for dropping liners if they overheat. That would cause a knock, and the block is useless after a liner falls. The one I showed you does not run liners, so it would be less succeptable to overheating.

I only have 90k on my engine, and it runs strong. It was a little gooped up when I got it, but I have been cleaning it out slowly and running Royal Purple all of the time. Hopefully it will last as long as I need it too, but I like looking into re-power options for later. My wife goes to the mall and I get on the net to see what I can do to my truck......

Yeah that was my biggest fear about buying that motor was if it had overheated? But I figured at a $150 there were enough spare parts I could use (I could use a new exh manifold) that I wouldn't be out too much if it was junk.

I've been slowly cleaning out my engine too. Whenthe weatherstarts to cool down a bit in Sept I plan on pulling my valve covers & rocker rails & cleaning them. Then flushing the coolant.Looks like I caught my pick up tube in time as I've done 500+ miles since I cleaned it and no knocks or abnormal noises yet! Plus a very definate increase in oil pressure. I did have to limp it home about 1-2 miles with the oil light coming on @ low rpm, so I was worried there might have been some permanent damage. Luckily I was just around the corner from home. This was about 200 miles after doing the trans fluid flush. I'm guessing it loosed up some crud and the pick up tube sucked it up off the bottom of the oil pan as it got hot, because when I started it the next day the oil light stayed off? But anyway it stayed parked until I got time to pull the oil pan.

LOL @ wife & mall, I do the same thing as you, I don't actually buy things as often as my girlfriend but I think if we compared over the course of a year I probably spend more on car related shopping than she spends on clothes & things that "look nice". My purchases tend to be less frequent but much larger $$$. Browsing Craigslist for "bargains" is a bad habit for me. I'm actually going to look at another cheap Disco I on Craigs' tomorrow! I made a promise though I wouldn't own anymore than two cars at a time, I was up to four in Feb of this year!

I think Land Rover used the Buick/GM based Rover V8 up to 2005 or 2006? So yours should be of GM/Buick origin.

Yep. The LR-3 had another motor, but series 1 and 2 discoverys had the old Buick pushrod.
