I recently bought my 2000 Discovery 2 with a 119,000 miles on it. Didn't have any problems with it until recently. When I first start the truck, the rpms jump around a bunch under 1000. A couple of times it has just sputtered out, usually though I can drop it into reverse or drive and and it will come close to sputtering out. However with a little gas it seems to pick back up and then runs fine. Except for the noise now, the truck sounds like the engine is running harder/louder. No real shaking just making a lot of noise. Anyhow any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been doing lots of research and have been pointed to numerous possible culprits. i.e. air filter, MAF, o2 sensor, plugs/wires, coils, fuel filter etc. However I didn't see anything that was exactly the same problem I was having so I thought I'd cast a line out here and see if any of you could help/ had any insights.

go to the near APS (autozone, advanced, checker ???) and have them read the codes. Then come back with the #'s and i'm sure you will find the help you need.
But get the #'s of the codes not the names, the name can vary but the #'s do not.
without number is just guessing. Even if there is not a check engine light there could still be codes stored.

 

Get the code numbers and get back to us. When was it last tune along with new plug wires, what octane gas are you running and when did you last clean your t/body?

Yikes, I know. Mike I use premium gas, and have never cleaned the (tbar?) I'm not really sure exactly what that is. As far as changing the wires, I've been scanning these forums for a couple weeks now and have since put that on my short list of things to do sooner than later. I've taken note from some your previous posts on what wires to use, more importantly what not to use.

I knew when I got this car that it needed a little TLC, but that's a lot of codes. Again, thanks in advance for the knowledge.

 

So I was poking around under the hood, and when I lifted up the Maf housing, this was underneath. Not sure where it came from, but it looks like it broke off from the mass air meter hose. that explains the melted plastic smell, that would come and go.

 

OK, so you need to find a used air intake hose before you do anything else.
Call Paul Grant, number is in my signature section, he should have one.
Install it, clear the codes and wait to see what comes back.

I left a message with your guy about the intake, and will let you know how it goes after install. Until then I have lots of other things to work on, been seeing your work in a lot of forums from years back. There is a lot of backlogged work to go through already. And your RAVE manual link was very helpful this afternoon as well, thanks again.

 

Replaced the intake hose and the LR is running a lot better. Thanks again Mike for Mr. Grant's number, the part came yesterday and was able to drop it in rather quickly/easily. I just cleared my codes and will be back with the new codes for hopefully some further direction in a couple days. Thanks again for the help, will keep you all updated on the next problem. Which is looking like the ABS module, since my dashboard is still lit up like a Christmas tree.

 

Well just got back from the shop and the following codes are what I'm getting back:

P1590
P1412
P1415
P0455

Any good leads would be appreciated, I'm gonna start my research now

 

P0455 is evaporative emission control system leak - popped up on my disco a couple times. just replaced / re-screwed the gas cap on tight - eliminated the code

the p1590 will be taken care of once you tackle the three amigos
