Default 2000 Disco Steering Problem

Just to start off that I love my disco and it has been basically a good month or so of heavy use. I tend to drive about 3000+ miles a month and just waiting for the company car so that way this can be what I want itto be a nice off road vehicle. With that said on to the problem...

This problem just started a few days ago and is kinda of intersting for me. I do mostly interstate driving running about 70+ mph and it drives and handles great. Though as the day conitnues say if I drive like I just did for 3 hours or so the steering begins to act like the power side is gone under 10 mph. After you speed up a little ways it comes right back and handles for the most part as it should. Though you do notice that it is slightly tougher to turn. Though if I will drive it around sometimes it will clear up and go back to normal. It will be fine when I will go out in the morning. It did it on Sat on the way back from a concert and then several times thru this week. Each time in the morning it is great and it only happens after a long day of driving thatI have problems.

I have already checked the fluid res and lines to make sure that there was no leakspresent. I have a full res and the ace system is as well (was thinking maybe but it didnt hurt while I was there). I also dont have any warning lights on the dash nor I have even seen a glimpse of one. Though ifyou dolisten carefully you kinda of hear a growl coming from under the hood. It is still driveable so I am not to worried but if I need to start looking at replacing some parts I would like to know what of so I can get it on order and arrange my work schedule to tear into it. Any ideas??

Thanks

Well I figure I should ask for some more guidance before I take it in...I dont have time to work on this myself...crazy work schedule.

The problem now is constant and started shortly this morning. I drove all the way up to Rock Springs Wy and it was acting up the whole way there and back. Well I checked the belt and it looks to be new. There is no signs of damage nor it being lose after letting it run all day. While I had it running I did look a the fluid res and there was no movement at all. Being tall enough I moved or tried to move the wheel back and forth to see if there was and of course there wasnt. The ACE system res was all moving up and down and splashing inside. That is what prompted me to check. There is now no noises coming from the engine while turning.

Any Ideas if this would be the pump? If so where can I get one I know Land rover is going to be $$$ but the dealer I purchased this at is willing to look into the replacement if it isnt to much or they will split it like the cruise control ECU. Any ideas or guidance would be great...thank you.

Look in the resivoir for blockage over the hole going to the pump. You need to change and flush the fluid. Oil breaks down over time. If you do need a pumpyou mighttry these online shops.

Atlantic British sells a pump for $399.00(genuineLR part?), Rovers North has them for $511(genuine LR part). RoverConnection.com has genuine LR parts New $495, Rebuilt by Land Rover $250., Refundable core charge $120. I have had good service from all 3 shops.

I will have to try doing the flush as described in another post tomorrow night. Hopefully that is it and it will not be to bad. Though I noticed that autozone sells a power steering pump for about 300...I really was hoping not to have to dump that much money intoone but eh that is the way of the Rover as some say.

If you can,I would suggest you call me ASAP, you have a problem that is only going to get worse. I'll be home till 8:30am, Colorado time and be back for the rest of the day by noon.

Your pump is failing and with another drive today it will lock up and probably spin your belt off leaving you stranded.

Well....

I knew I should have checked this morning....thanks for the info Mike and you where right. I was about 30 miles from home and the ACE warning lights and the temp started to climb. The Rover is now leaking power steering fluid slowly from the area around the pump. The belt sheared itself off and basically I know have two belts in the engine.

Well hopefully the dealer will cover this as warranty due to the fact that it is part of the engine. When I purchased this it had a 3000 mile power train warranty on it. They told me today that it wouldnt be covered but considering that I had it scheduled to go in tomorrow morning for a repair on this problem we will have to see. What would you say part of the engine or no ???

Once again thanks Mike but I was in a rush to get going and now just go home from having it towed down the the Land Rover Dealer where they want me to get it repaired at. Though if it is not covered is this hard to change out ? I am handy with a tool box but find time is a problem. Though at the moment I have plenty...

I thought I would leave another update....

Well it was the power steering pump and the dealer wanted a thousand dollars to replace it. So I have conviced them to buy the parts and tow the vehicle back to where I live. I am talking to the guy at roverconnection because I have bought parts from him before and he is just down the road. Really nice to be able to go get your parts and see what you are getting.

So I was hoping that someone had the instructions or could give me some guidance on how to replace this part. I have the RAVE cd on order but it isnt here yet and I will be tackling this project either this weekend or next. Any help would be appreciated...and Mike if you are available could I call you at some point to talk about this if you know what to do and etc.
