2000 discovery II over heat ?
This is my cousins 2000 Land Rover discovery II with a 4.0 L v-8 motor , It has a NEW radiator , new water pump, NEW thermostat, all new hoses,
He drove it to my house in KY from Colorado ,and noticed it was running on the hot side , not over heating but hot , made it about half way (600miles) and it started over heating really bad , it has more or less a new cooling system and won't stop over heating ??? Am I missing something ? any ideas on what to do next ? He had to leave this turd at my house and fly home so now I'm trying to fix it !!! HELP !!!!!

This truck has been over heated!! and I have heard that the 4.0 trucks have problems with the sleeves, The owned does plan on putting a 4.6 crate motor in it but not till I find for sure what the problem is ! $7000 is a lot to drop for no reason,
do you hear a waterfall sound in the cab when the vehicle is running? like water sloshing around?
is the oil dark or milkshake like?
try bleeding the cooling system and see if that changes anything, testing the fan clutch should be put the truck to temperature and turn it off and try to spin the fan. if it spins freely it needs to be replaced.

if it is getting hot while driving on the highway, you can rule out fans and clutches. they do nothing at highway speed. it sounds more like a water flow problem or air in system. check for exhaust gas in system

also I had a problem with that old brittle plastic T, on my last d2. a piece broke off and clogged the flow of coolant. it was a little piece. it does not take much. I would also take the stat off (new or not) and test it, in water, on the stove. I had a new lr stat stick with in the first week of use.
make sure belt routing is correct.

Before you guess your way thru a lot of money, there are certain tests that you should do, like coolant pressure test, chemical block test. Also for what it is worth, the 4.6 engine has a much worse track record then the 4.0 when it comes to sleeves. If there is a sleeve issue, it can be repaired for a lot less money then a new 4.6 short block.

DON'T DRIVE IT WHEN BROKEN
Especially for 600 miles. If you didn't have a bad head gasket before, you do now - or much worse.
I would check for the waterfall sound when you accel out of a stop light.
if that exists, then the cooling system needs bleed.
As long as the engine did not super heat on the long trip, you are probably OK.
If the small electric aux fan is Always on - that means you are over 212 degrees F and your cooling system is saying "oh crap" and that fan is on to pull in more air.
You can get a cheap scanner. Put it into the OBD-II and keep it on monitoring temp of engine.
I have a junk chinese scanner and it reads temps great.
The biggest difference I found is putting in that soft spring 180 degree T-stat made by Land Rover. About $70 from AB.
And a new radiator helped.
And a new Hayden HD fan clutch helped too.
You already did all that so...
Maybe put on a new fan serp belt.
if yours is glazed, maybe your belt is slipping.
Put the high beams on, the defrost on, the back windows defrost on.
Gun the engine.
if the belt squeals replace it.
