22Dirty,

What is the brand and model of the head unit you installed? I'm trying to get an idea of what would fit best and if I could find the depth dimension of that compared to others it would help.

Trying to get something that would set back a little better.

That wouldn't fit a Disco II. Maybe the Range Rover, not sure. But for it to imply it would fit the 03 Disco II is an error. Would cover your air vents.

Default To double din or not to double din

Thanks for the inspiration, 22Dirty. I was considering taking this project on myself. Nice job.

Why you would cut into your rover when there are great options for single din units that are plug and play, is beyond me.

Default double din disco

I just finished mine, it was more about patience than talent. I tend to get in a rush and try to wet-sand before the paint is dry and make things worse. anyway, it wasn't as bad as i initially thought. I know there are people that don't see the point in cutting the bezel to make this work, but to each their own....

SWEET.... your pic looks nice.... if anything real nice.... did your dbl din come with the cage surround..... looks like it did.... the frustrating part for me was that mine came with no cage.... this made it harder for me as I had nothing to build around....

Just another update on mine.... I hooked up the reverse cam after all.... I was not to happy about ripping apart the dash again but then again I should have pre wired it in advance and just left the wires in the glove box or something.... would have made the cam install much quicker....

anyways the trick to the back up cam is to use a real long rca cord.... one cord connects to camera, the other gets spliced to access inner wire and then connect to the reverse power wire in the back... for me this was easy as I had just done led reverse lights so I knew exactly wich wire to tap into... then behind the dash plug in the one rca to the deck, and strip the other end of wire to access inside wire and hook up to reverse wire to deck.... then hide the wire of course..

now I wont smash in my gas tank again.....

i didn't have a surround either, i used sheet metal that I wrapped around the headunit like you did with the brick straps and used the two upper screws that used to hold the factory bezel; i did have to put some screws into the dash to hold that metal piece to the dash since it is just plastic-welded/soldered up there. I hooked it all up at one time. it took me longer to get the bezel the way i wanted since I kept trying to rush through and messing up the paint.

The OPs double DIN dash set up certainly updates the dash layout to a more modern look. I like it!

I have a single DIN Kenwood Excelon unit. I also bought a lower trim plate to cover up space at the bottom of the unit (
Amazon.com: Metra 89-9400 DIN Mountable Trim Plate for 1994-2004 Land Rover Discovery Vehicles (Black): Car Electronics Amazon.com: Metra 89-9400 DIN Mountable Trim Plate for 1994-2004 Land Rover Discovery Vehicles (Black): Car Electronics
)

I like this flip up unit as the screen sits higher above the dash. The higher screen allows my kids to watch moves from the rear seats. I bypassed the circuitry so that the movies and navigation data entry will play even when the car is being driven.

The flip up screen can also be adjusted to different tilt angles and distance from the dash.

My unit is rigged to GPS, rear backup, IPOD, USB aux and Bluetooth AD2P. Works great with the stock speakers.
