2000 V8 Engine
I am a Land Rover newbie, but a long time ASE certified crazy old fart. A fairly nice 2000 Disco 2 just landed in my lap and I’m trying to figure out what to do with it. It has a little over 200,000 miles. I’m looking for engine rebuild kits, but not finding much. Are the sleeves too thin to bore? I haven’t torn it down, but I would assume that it would need it. I haven’t seen sleeves either…what’s the story? Where can I find parts? I use a really good machine shop, but it’s racing season and they are very busy, so I haven’t even talked to them yet…doubt they know anything about Rovers anyways…
Thanks!!

Hey Bro,
Thanks for your reply!! I understand the sizing deal. I was just looking for prices, not trying to order parts before I knew what I was dealing with. I’m trying to figure out if I want to just repair it and sell it, part it out, or sink some serious time and money into it and keep it. It would be a Very Cool ride for sure, but the more I read, the more I realize that it is more suitable as a hobby vehicle. It looks like it’s not something that I could sink $3000-4000 (excluding my labor) into and be a dependable ride for my family…we do some serious miles and rarely, but sometimes need 4x4. Not to mention the resale value sucks green weenies, but that wouldn’t matter to me though…IF I could be confident in the dependability. With that said, I’m still on the fence, I REALLY Like It, but I’m leaning toward making a buck and trying to find a 4 runner that’s not too overpriced…

If you really like it and like to tinker you should read up on here about the engine swaps. If I remeber correct, we have someone in Alabama installing a mid 90's 4.8L gm v8, some one in Florida installing a Gen 3 L something 5.3L, and on another land rover site a guy in San Diego is making a Gen 4 GM LSx v8 swap kit.
Every one here knows the engine is the weak link of their rover. Not to mention bad gass mileage.
So if you like it so, I say read up on the engine swaps and pick one that works for you.... and don't for get to post what you do.

Yea, do a Chevy swap! Look of Shade Tree's LSx swap thread, awesome switch and it looks like he's getting close to done including all the electronics working.
It sounds like you know what you're doing. Yes, the engine is the weak link, but with top hat sleeves, new bearings, rings, replace cam/lifters/rocker arms/valves, all the things you do with a complete rebuild, it can be pretty reliable. And for the love of God, use a quality head gasket. I've had mine a year and a half, I did a partial rebuild when I did head gaskets and it's never caused me a lick of trouble (that's just the engine, other things will here and there as is true with everything that has 100+k miles).
I say fix it and drive it! Expect to get ~13 mpg though, unless you do a Chevy swap. Do a Chevy swap. It's my dream.
