The other day my wife was driving her 2001 disco II , and it just shut down on her. It would crank over but not start. she had it towed and when she got it home it would start in the driveway. So I drove it yesterday started fine drove it 5 mins or so and the manual and sport mode lights started flashing as well as shifting weird. about a min later it shuts down and wont start untill the vehicle cools down. This vehicle has driven like a dream up to this point.(no weird noises or any indication of a problem)? Thx

 

Well you have low voltage, that is why the "M" and "S" lights flash and the transmission shifts funny.
The trans is electronic and when the voltage gets to low it is the first to lose power.
Have the alternator and the battery tested.

 

I know the battery is old (05) and was very corroded. It still cranks over no problem but is due for a change for sure. Thx, you eased my mind a bit. I just thought it would be somthing major. like i said the thing shifted like a dream up untill that point. Thx again.

 

Crank shaft sensor or throttle position sensor are likely culprits too. Both are cheap and easy fixes. TPS is more likely to mess with the transmission.

Both parts are less than 100 bucks. No stress. Take it to a good independent if you do not feel confident after the battery swap. I had an independent put in a CSS for two hundred. That was reasonable for me because I did not have the time and I needed the fix done in a day.

 

Gonna test the alt and change the battery tomorrow. Thx for all the advice. this is my first disco. Just a little more electronics than im used to.(not the same as my old bronco. lol) I just got the repair manual for it today off ebay. My dad owns a repair shop so luckily i can do the work myself.

 

The stalling/restart issue will be a crank sensor. This is a pretty common Rover issue.

 

Any suggestions on a good aftermarket source to find these parts?

Crankshaft Position Sensor,you could check to see if you have any spark to verify.You probably won't find one for too much less than the dealer. I'd replace it even if that's not your problem. It's not too hard to replace if you don't mind working in tight places.

 

Def have spark. It will start. just will die after 5mins or so. orderd a new battery today. Gonna get the volt meter out and check the alt tomorrow. Thx everyone for all the advice.
