Question 2002 Disco II SE Drive Shaft Question

Hello- I just bought a 2002 Land Rover Discovery Series II SE Kalahari a few months ago. After a long trip it started making a squeaking noise at certain speeds- not when braking. My mechanic says it's the U joint in the front drive shaft. The one closest to the CAT. Prob got hot and dried the U joint out. I recently lost one of my jobs so money is tight. Could anyone recommend or have experience with buying a cheaper drive shaft online? I don't have a ton of cash right now and basically just use this truck as a daily driver and not for serious off road stuff.

I'm thinking instead of messing with trying to replace the U joints or rebuild the shaft it would be easier to just bolt on a new front drive shaft. I searched on the forum for some links to some OK/mediocre quality drive shafts but didn't see any so i thought I'd make a thread. Much thanks to all
Cheers mates

Here are some I'm looking at:

Got a pic of the plaque under the hood? Curious to the build date of another Kalahari. Any shaft with zerk fittings is a mass improvement vs the stock unit.

You can order the shaft from Lucky 8 LLC and install it yourself.

https://lucky8llc.com/collections/di...ont-driveshaft

Two open end wrenches is all you should need.

I bought a good used front one with fittings for 80$ delivered, off ebay.. front joint has grease fitting, the double cardan does not. Worked fine. Anything new will be better than the bad shaft you have....

why are you buying a complet propshaft when it no difficult to replace the U joint, unless the ends are damaged you can change aU joint in about 30-45 mins, once you have the shaft off

All you need is a decent bench vice, a brass drift or punch a hammer, circlip pliers , but new ones can have the new type clip removed with a pair of Long Nose pliers
basically take the shaft off, remove the circlips, x 4, now punch the centre to one side and push the cap out put the cap in the vice and lever the cap out repeat on the other 3 cap , once this is done you can remove the crossed middle section,
clean it all up
Now put a bit of extra grease on the new cap to keep the needle rollers in place a carefully put in in the joint, and push it home with the vice,Now put the new cross in place with the corresponding grease seal in place, be gentle if you get any resistance stop knock the cap out a bit and check the needle rollers have not drop in the cap, you may need to knock the cap fully out, later as you get to opposite sides, once you have all 4 caps on knock them in with the brass punch until you can fit the new circlip, repeat on the other 3, , Grease the new joint with a grease gun, and refit the shaft,

an yes any replacement should have a grease nipple on the U joint, for serviceing

yes I did mine a few weeks ago just need a little patient at times with the needle rollers or thicker grease

do this now. Before you lose your transmission. Don’t drive the car until you’re done.
