For starters, I would suggest that you create your own thread and not hijack someone elses with an unrelated problem.

That being said you should find an independent land rover specialist who works on nothing but land rovers. not the dealer.

Otherwise taking matters into your own hands entails having a code reader or access to one, A code reader would tell you why the CEL is on. You can even get the codes read at most auto parts stores. Knowing what the issues are before paying someone to tell you and assessing if you have the tools and skills to do the job yourself is the way to go. Often second and third opinions are required.

Did you have the heads machined and block decked when the HG's were done?
I'm not really too sure if the heads were machined and block decked since it was my dads truck at the time of the repair. He got it done at a place called kal tire which was probably a huge mistake. How much is this truck even worth now in this state with the head gasket blown? Maybe its just worth selling at this point and buying a new car instead of putting in more money with this kinda miles on it.

It's worth $1500 tops with blown HG's.

For around $2k you can get the HG's done correctly by an indy LR specialist.

Same job DIY would cost you under $400 in parts/machine shop and minimum 12 hours labor.

You are probably correct about your dad having the HG job done at a place called Kal Tire.

The first thing you should do is get two or three estimates from reputable local LR shops for the repair.

Or download the RAVE and do a lot of reading HG posts here and attempt it yourself.

Once you get the Head Gaskets sorted you'll need to make sure the cooling system is in top shape, after that you should have another 80 or 90,000 miles to enjoy your ride... Of course there will be other issues and costs along the way, but if you like the ride and learn to take care of it, you will get rewarded. Ignore required maintenance, take short cuts, employ unqualified mechanics, or just not interested in the above you will hate it every waking moment.

Your call.

I could tell you the deck wasn't block with seeing it. it requires the whole motor be disassembled.

Exactly like that. Land Rover specific, non dealer.

Just as a note though I'll say the two places I trust the most in my area have the lamest websites with old graphics, fonts, and not frequently updated.

The places that quoted me the highest and/or told me I needed a new engine for $9000.00 were/are the opposite.

Find a few more shops, read all the local reviews online, talk to them about your issues in person and get a quote. take a look at their operation, take a look at their techs...

Then decide who you trust with your truck and who gets your hard earned money.

Yeah there is only TRS and this place in my area.

British Auto Specialists offers mechanical repair and body work for British built vehicles, loacated in Calgary

So ill give them a call and see how much all this is going to cost me. I love the truck but the problem is my dad really didn't take care of it. He put in the wrong oil and or didn't change the oil frequently enough. He only took it to the shop when something broke on it and the shop he took it to was kal tire which was a horrible choice IMO. Thanks a lot dave.

Ouch, you get to pay now for all the work your dad didn't do...

Thats why folks on here highly recommend paying for a pre purchase inspections by one of the above mentioned specialists if you don't know what all to look for yourself. It prevents one from buying the opportunity to do all of the preventive maintenance that the PO didn't do.

Hopefully you haven't overheated your engine with all the coolant loss.

Before you talk to the local shops you should read up on head gaskets on this and other Land Rover Discovery forums so you are up on all the terminology and specification/options/conditions that are possible. Learn how much things should cost and how long they take before you go to any shop. Read the Major Service stickies on this forum to see what you have and have not done yet. Be familiar with the condition of your vehicle and any warning light codes it may have.

Then when you do go to a shop for a quote you can tell if they know what they are talking about and more importantly ask some intelligent questions.

This will go a long way toward a better outcome for you and whoever fixes your truck.
