LR will remain hushed about the complete fix. Main reason is the liability behind it, if they give full disclosure they are then liable to make all of the repairs. For now its just a memo.

Also just because you have a truck in that range does NOT mean it will blow up. They give a range so that you can be more aware of an issue but it doesnt mean it WILL happen.

turbodave over on LRforums.com remachined his front cover. I don't have the direct link handy buy you can do a search and find out what he did.

Removing just the top pin might be an option, too.

Dont panic. There are several '04s that are also affected. Most failures occur BEFORE 50k. If you really want peace of mind get an extended warranty from a place like US Fidelis, they quoted me $350 a month for 18 months and fully covered for full 3 years.

If not drive it carefully, get an oil pressure gauge and watch it. If it drops pull over as soon as safe, get it towed to a local repair place. Have oil pump replaced and keep an eye on it again.

No guarantees in life but death and taxi's, (damn yellow fiends). Anyones engine can go nuclear one day going to the store. IMHO enjoy your truck and be mindful of the oil pressure.

$350 x 18 months in a money market account = $6,300+, and you get to keep your money after 3 years providing your motor doesn't go before then. If your motor does go, you're still saved the headache of getting US Fidelis to pay (and believe me, they have a department and a legal team dedicated to getting out of payment on claims)

How difficult is it to swap out the oil pump gears?

Provided that your front cover is in good shape, AB has them for $99.

http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/8979.cfm

With that, a few gaskets, and a weekend it shouldn't be much of a waste to swap them out with a dowel pin removed and see what happens.

Maybe even install an aftermarket oil pressure gauge just to keep an eye on things...

if you remove the alignment pin from the block, remember that the housing can now move sideways, since it is also supporting a water pump with a belt connected to it, It might not be long before the oil rotor is damaged with a moving cover .
I like the idea of fitting the oil pump/housing and making sure the oil pump gears were not loaded then redrilling another pin.
from the OP it looks like the front cover needs to have the top portion moved a few thousands to the passenger side, but I would also guess that every engine might require a different movement YMMV

I like poker, so I am totally with you. Right now I have a good hand showing (no oil pressure issues) and I am gonna wait till the flop comes out (100K+ miles). If I make it there I think I have dodged a major issue. If not, well then I got to play the hand I am delt.
