Default 2003 Discovery 2 Occasional Manual & Sport mode lights Flashing

I have a 2003 Discovery 2 with 145k miles. The truck runs OK except it got occasionally Manual & Sport mode lights flashing with no reason. It will run OK after I stop and restart the car. This happens several times already in the past two months or so.

Is it anything wrong with the transmission? anywhere I need to start with the diagnosis? and how to?

Many thanks!

I faced a similar issue a couple of years ago. Solved it with a new battery. Get your battery checked. How old is it?

I hope acg is right. I had a slightly more expensive transmission issue.

check grounds and battery terminal connections, odds are strong it's battery related.

Will the regular OBD2 code reader read the transmission codes? Thanks,

Depends on the particular reader you have, but usually not. Transmission codes are not part of the OBD2 system.

99% of the time this is voltage, related to bad grounds, corroded connections or a failing alternator. The switch on the transfer case can go bad the light might flicker but generally it just does not work.

Transmission codes will light the check engine light, and any ODB reader will display them at least they have for me in Torque.

You need to stop and take a big breathe:
  1. Check your battery voltage after sitting over night it should be 12.6 or better
  2. Check the voltage at the battery with engine running 13.7 to 14.1 with nothing turned on except the engine
  3. Turn on everything : lights, heated seats, radio, heater fan to high and defroster an heated windshield voltage should still be above 13.4 or so at the battery
  4. If all of this is good toss the multi meter in the Disco next time you have the issue pull over and check the battery voltage
