You can even shim the battery clamps with a toothpick. I've done it. I've also run a very small screw into the gap between the battery post and the cable terminal. Another trick is to squeeze the cable terminals slightly with a pair of Vise Grips to deform them from round. Any of the three methods can work to help ensure a better connection to get enough current (amps) to the starter.

Which battery you choose can make a difference, but an advantage of the military style connections is that they extend the length of the cable. The clamp is a separate piece with double attachments at the end, then you crimp on large lugs to the wires. You'll actually have more wire reach than when you started.
