OK. So I took it to another mechanic in San Francisco. He is very good and has worked with series IIs for a long time. He says it is the oil pump. The pressure tests out at 9 & 42. He says not eough oil to the top of the engine. He said not to worry that he has seen it before and fix over 30. I should have went to this dude in the first place.

So is he going to replace the front engine cover and oil pump?
How much for him to do that?
Get on it quick before you do more damage.

If you are making that sort of noise, you do need to worry. When a mechanic says not to worry about an internal noise, I go shoping for a new mechanic.

By not worry he meant the situation was not hopeless. He did say not to drive it anymore.

Yes.. He estimates 1K - 1.5K unless the valaves are hosed.

Kohlbella, is your 03 in the VIN range? I'm curious.

Just keep in mind that this will happen again because the problem is with the engine block.
It was cast out of spec and because of this it puts extra wear on the oil pump and front engine cover.

Default Beware the oil pump clatter....

the bottom line up front (BLUF) for my 2003 was a new short block exchange done at Land Rover Cape Fear in Wilmington, NC. the dealer in the island state i purchased the rover in couldn't figure out the terrible noise my wife went in once a month for 6 months for. we had the 75k maintenance done at around 60k just to try to figure it out ($1800). the oil pump was filleted to hear the LRCF service manager talk about it. over 10k on the bill cost me a $100 deductible which he applied toward a head job i had done in conjunction. maybe this helps or not, your mileage may vary.
and yes, we actually use the rover. folks flip out when they see scuba tanks and other stuff come out and go back in with the sand, salt, and whatever else on it.
