2003 Sleeve Noise - How long will she last
Hello All
Recently purchased a 2003 Disco with 122k miles for $3000 after I hit a dear with my 2012 X5. I have put around 2k miles on the vehicle and have noticed the sleeve noise appeared (none cold, once warmed it ticks, above 2k goes away).
I put 5w-30 in the rig at a rate of 1/2 quart per 225 miles (every fill up)
I use the rig to drive to work and back (32 miles) per day. Excellent in the winter when we had -30/-40 F temps (NE North Dakota) and needed to get to work in a blizzard.
ultimate question.... how ready should I be for an LS swap? can anyone tune into how many miles they got out of their disco once they noticed the sleeve movement?
should I switch to 5/10w - 40 instead? read someone had the quietest noise with that.
appreciate your time!

Well 1st off 5 is way too light in general 10/30 10/40 is normal a lot of brits run 20/50.
Next off a loose sleeve is not a really a tick is is more of a thud it is hard to explain but it is very different sound.
So you have a warm tick could be :
bad oil pressure
Cracked exhaust - which tends to tick at temp but not cold
Sticky lifters will can tick hot or cold.
Or legitimately a sleeve - but that usually takes a significant overheat event to manifest

Maybe I should get some audio of it to confirm with the Gurus ie yall. Problem is I literally work too much and never have time to play with it, can i get oil pressure from OBD or do i NEED to get it external
I would stick with the 5w40 because of the cold weather. You can’t get oil pressure from the obd but you can get coolant temp. You need to get it under 200 degrees f for that tick to go away
Sounds like you need to research this forum. Lots of readings. But all your answers will be here.

Run Shell Rotella 15w-40. 10-30 is no bueno on these motors.
Are you leaking a ton of oil as well? That oil consumption you are describing is very high , so hopefully it's leaking externally. If not, and it's burning/using that oil, you're probably looking at other work to get the engine fixed.

Pull the the oil breather - my bet is it clogged your oil consumption could be from that read this thread

Because you are ND location I would recommend 0w40 for winter use and 15-w40 in the summer. Your tick could be low oil pressure or a slipped sleeve. You will need an external oil pressure gauge to check the oil pressure, low pressure could be because of a cracked oil pump gear or walked cam bearing. You may be able to get it to stop ticking by lowering the engine operating temperature, since it is an 03 you would be limited to a 180 temp before it throws a low temperature code. The inlinne thermostat mod at the top of the forum runs about 10 degrees cooler than the factory 180 thermostat, I would recommend that regardless of your oil pressure situation.
These are all good suggestions, the oil pressure gauge, with a filter sandwich adapter, will cost you $100. good to have for a myriad of reasons. Inline thermostat is a good $100 to spend to minimize temps, reducing the occurrence. Although at your temps you would not get much heat in the winter.
If you spray water on the drivers side of the engine, does the ticking go away? It should take a fair amount of water. I was skeptical about having a bad liner, but it turned out that is exactly what it was, I had it for atleast a couple years, then it just got so loud I decided I had to do something about it. You should also be a concerned about mixing oil and coolant if the sleeve slides around too much. I had two trucks, both around the 120k mile mark where the noise got bad.
There are lots of write ups about pinning the sleeves. Its pretty simple in theory, I would be that you could find a shop to do it near you, or if you have the ability to do a swap, the pinning is easy. Plus, it is generally only the drivers side that needs doing.
