Default 2004 disco spun main bearing

as stated in the title. what should i do. it has 102,000 miles and the local shop wants $5,500 to replace the engine. Is it worth anything to trade in? does that price sound about right? any information is appreciated.

thanks in advance

What was the engine doing that alerted you to this? Curious if the main bearing could just be replaced and address the damage caused by it? Without seeing the engine torn apart it would hard to say. I hope you are not at the dealer??

it started sounding like a diesel and the oil light came on. i took it to a shop and they thought it might be the oil pump. they got in and saw that it was a spun bearing. they said there was no way to fix without a new engine.

Regardless of what caused it to spin, if it spun at all the block is junk more or less. Just visually verify for yourself it spun then start finding prices on used or new short blocks or long blocks

is there any alternate engines that i can put in my disco? the engines i keep finding are costing around $3700.00. I asked some local shop and he said to possibly look into a ford 4.6 modular engine? I dont really know much about engines, and am looking for a place to confirm that this will/will not fit. I figured there is no better place to check than on this forum. any information will be appreciated. hope you all have a great new year.

Have you started a search thru the local yards for another 4.6?
Not knowing where you live, since you never filled out all your information when signing up, I can't help you but you might get intouch with Paul or Will on their sites located down in my signature section.
Figure about 12 hours labor and you can switch out your engine.

i live in st. louis missouri. i called a bunch of local yards and they had nothing. i had a local shop diagnose the problem and they said they could find one for 3500 plus 2000 labor. also i talked to a few online data bases for engines and they did a nation wide search. and the cheapest they had was about 3500 as well.

$3,500 is kind of high for a used engine. You can sometimes find used Disco II's for $3000-4000.

Have you tried http://modernimports.com/ ? I usually talk to Kevin when looking for something. Feel free to tell him Jeremy from Columbia (the guy who is always looking for obscure stuff) referred you.

Just out of curiosity. I have made a few trips to my local racing machine shop having them inspect a 4.6 block I have for sale, the shop is really knowledgeable with rebuilding engines. Why couldn't he pull the block have it welded where the bearing spun out. (adding back material). Have the crankshaft journal welded where it was worn down and then have it turned down back to spec. Or put an oversized bearing at that part of the crankshaft. It seems that may only be $500 to $800 in machine shop cost. After talking with these engine shops there may be a lot of work they can do rather than finding a new engine. What are your thought on this route?
