If year, mileage, condition, and price are all equal what car would you choose?
The discovery or the Range rover?
I totaled my 2003 Discovery. I did most of the maintenance myself except for the head gasket. Thus, I'm aware these cars aren't the cheapest to maintain. Is the Range Rover cheaper to maintain?
Really, I guess I'm just wondering the pros and cons of 'upgrading' to a RR?

Because you're cross shopping '04's it's a harder discussion. Apples to oranges.
if you want a staight axle and a Rover V8 then the D2 is the only option. For offroad, the D2 eats the RR's lunch. The RR is a very large car.
Onroad, the RR shares many/most of its components with a BMW X5 of the same year. You can expect a fast, comfortable Interstate cruiser. Additionally, you can upgrade the RR's head unit to one from a newer BMW.
Reliability may be a toss up. The D2 is simpler and more field repairable, and of course the Rover V8 has a reputation for grenading to uphold whereas the RR is a more modern design but has more stuff to break.
If you want a highway beast or second car for carpool duty and don't mind the added complexity of the RR, then its a solid choice.
I'd buy a D2 if I "needed" the classic shape and if I did off-road my truck.

My .02
I would go with a Super Charged Range Rover and settle for nothing less as far as the Range Rover line up goes. I "feel" if I purchased a non Super Charged, I would always feel I missed out.
Now...until a Super Charged comes along in the right set up for the right price, I am going to have fun with my 01 Tricky Dick.
While the 04's Disco still has some personality (IMO) and the 04 Range Rover has the Grey Poupon factor... considering all things equal, I would go with the Disco over the Range Rover as that Range Rover in the same price range will fall short of the Super Charged version.

I would also wait for a Super Charged Range Rover Sport.
