What transmission was this?
Anyone have any specs on it (gearing)?

You're probably referring to a vehicle outside of the US, likely mated to a Td5 engine. It would be an R380 5 speed.

Land Rover gear ratios

 

This is a North American model. I have also come across several G4 owners who mention having a 5 speed and others with a 4 speed.

Here was the press release for the g4:
"Off-road capability is at the core of the Land Rover G4 Edition Discovery. Negative.. that's a typo. ZF and R380 were the only transmissions fitted to Discovery 2s.

 

Sounds like a G4 Big Daddy Range to me.....

If it's really got a 5 speed auto.

 

Seems odd that every press release about the 2004 Discovery G4 mentions a five speed trans. I would think that is the kind of typo LR would catch before sending out the release........

 

Maybe they mean 4 forward gears and one reverse.... wouldn't be the first time a marketing person got something wrong...

 

It is all pretty confusing. I have read ads where an owner swears he has a five speed, others where they recognize it is a 4 speed.

I wounder if the event trucks had 5's and the 200 "promotion" trucks had 4's?

Just looking for some concrete understanding, not supposition.

 

I hear you, but Microcat says there were two, and under the G4 edition sub-category it lists all the parts for those vehicles, still a ZF or R380.


Event trucks had some differences, but a transmission wasn't one of them. I've been in 3 G4s myself, while I never got up to speed to get into a 5th gear, I'm pretty positive it was the standard ZF.

 

To the best of my knowledge, the D2 whether ordinary or G4 has a 4 forward gear autobox or a 5 speed manual box. To extrapolate, that is 4 forward and 1 reverse in the auto and 5 forward and 1 reverse in the manual box which is doubled in both cases by the transfer box low range. I may be wrong, I often am, but I've never heard of a D2 with any more gears as standard.

Now the D3 and D4 are different again but that's another story.
