Does Synthetic oil Make a Big Difference Vs Regular Cheaper oil? I didnt know if it just laster longer or what. I just got my Disco and I had my first oil Change done at the SHop cause it was only 20 bucks, I usually do it myself. They Put in 10w30 Brand Name(Cant Remember the Brand, Yellow Bottle). Anyways Should I change it out to Synthetic? And maybe 10w 40? I have always owned older Fords so Regular oil has always been ok.

regular oil is fine as long as you change it regularly. The problem is people don't and it builds up sludge. People run synthetic to clean out the old deposits and avoid an engine flush. You can't run extended drains in these engines like you can in others. 3K max on regular oil, and 5K max on synthetic. I run 10K drains on my Cadillac, but change every 4K on the Rover. You may see a little incrase in MPG over regular oil, but changing your driveline fluids to synthetic will increase things the most.

IMO use a good HDEO like Rotella, Delvac, Delo, Delvac 1, Mobil 1 TDT. Either dino or synthetic depending on the season or your personal preferences. Regular conventional oils have ZDDP levels at 700 ppm max and HDEOs have ZDDP levels at at least 1100 ppm which is good for our flat tappet engines. Rotella just came out with the T5 syn blend in 10w30 that seems custom made for those Disco owners who use 10w30 in their engines.

Your oil weight should be based on where you live and the temp., not some ones opinion.
In Colorado, I run a 5W/30 in the winter and a 10W/40 in the summer. While living in a hotter area, Arizona, I only ran 20W/50.
Make sure to use a good filter like a K&N 3001 or a Mobil 1-301.

Hello Disco Mike, I'm new to the land rover world. I just purchased my first land rover D2 hse7 (2004). My question is what would be the best oil to use in the winter months where the the temps could drop to 20 degrees, and warm up to the 40's in the day. I live in El Paso, Tx. I've read so much about guys say they use rotella T-6, shell 15 40w, and others just no to sure what's to much for the oil pump in the winter. I understood in the summer where it reaches in the 100's to use thicker like ones I mentioned before. But winter months not sure what to use.
Thank You

Also Mike is long gone and not really the most qualified to answer. He hasn't been around in a couple years now.
To answer your question, it depends on where you live. I'm in VA. In the summer I run straight Rotella 15w40 and in the winter I run Rotella T6 (5w40) mixed 50/50 with Rotella 15w40 which gives a good 10w40 weight.
In the winter here it is freezing temps daily occasionally dipping into the negatives. Our summers are in the mid 80s-low 90s occasional hitting the high 90s or 100. This oil mix has been perfect for me so far.
