Default 3 Amigos & code readers

I’m new to the disco game and apologize if I annoy anyone with my questions, but some cannot be answered by a manual. So I have a 2000 disco and I’ve been reading about these three Amigos and sure enough just before inspection time they pop up, they did go out after sitting over night. Is it common for them to go on and off or do they eventually stay on? My real question has to do with code readers, I presently have none, I let someone borrow mine and it never came back. Why question is if you did not have an Obd2 reader would you buy any Obd2 reader and them buy the special 3 Amigos tool separately or would you just breakdown buy the Hawkeye that does everything? I know it is pricy but I prefer to do as many of my own repairs as possible. But Im old and an not up on all the ECU and other controls the are talked about all the time.

I bought the hawkeye, but I had more than one reason. I wanted to be able to read the abs codes. I wanted to be able to add the factory fog lamps and stuff if I bought a bumper that used them. I wanted to program my own key fob. (the dealer closest quoted me $150 for the key and $100 to program it. ). And other things too. I figured it would pay for itself eventually, though probably not as quick as the cheaper abs only reader.

I did wait for a sale though.

The hawkeye has drawbacks.... first it is pricey. It also has no detailed instructions. Some times you can figure it out from reading the RAVE manual. I cannot use it to program key fobs unless I have the full barcode that came with the key new.... unless someone can figure out how to recreate it from the short code number inside the fob. But I'm happy with it so far.
