Default 4.6 Ticking

2003 4.6 with 120k on the odometer. Neighbor was the first owner. LR rebuilt the motor years ago under warranty. Anyhow.

Time is here for head gaskets and everything else. Going to break the motor down tonight. God awful ticking coming from the passenger side. Not sure I'd it's a slipped liner or in the valve train. Looking for any advice on that. Also oil consumption. Like 1 quart every 1500 miles. Piston rings or maybe just the head gaskets leaking oil into the exhaust? Thoughts?

I had an engine that went through a quart of oil every 1000 miles, Dealers said it was within the "normal" range and were not willing to address the issue. What I later found was that it was a factory replacement block which the dealer broke in with Castrol Synthetic oil. It burned oil in that quantity for 160k miles. No loud noises though. That engine eventually had to be replaced due to a cracked block. So that kind of oil consumption may not be related to your noise.

They called that normal? Yeesh what a bunch of lazy blokes. I'm thinking that I'll try to compression test it. Haven't had to do that with a Rover motor yet. My worst fear is a cracked block. That would really bite.

What temperature are you running at ?? Ticking will happen if it’s hot if you can get it below 200 ticking usually goes away

Why is it time for head gaskets? Are you burning coolant?

It is possible that your valve stem seals are leaking into the combustion chamber. Mine recently were. If you do do the HG, it may be worth rebuilt heads from ABran.

If the liner is slipped you should inspect the bottom of the Head, and look for indent.

The noise could be anything, and hard to diagnose an engine without complete teardown. Are you positive it is not exhaust?

Could it be leaking the oil? In my very limited experience, diagnosis is absolutely the most important step.

Stock 190 thermostat currently installed. Swapping to 180 once the rebuild is done. It ticks constantly despite cold or heat. It was -15 this morning when she turned on. Still ticks. That's why I figured it was in the valve train. Just not sure. Have to tear it down.

No oil leaks. No exhaust leaks.

Leaking coolant from the front and rear of motor where the walls are really thin.

Check your oil separator if that thing is clogged you will use a lot of oil. Having an 03 there is no good way to get it out so use carb cleaner, take the passenger side hose off at the valve cover. Get a long straw in short applications hit the the hole until it drains easily. It works better with a warm engine but it will get the job done cold.

Actually I'm not sure where that oil separator is? EGR ? PCV? Is it built into the valve covers?

Forgot to mention ticking noises cold and warm could also be related to vacuum leak, Check the intake manifold on the passenger side, make sure the hose toward the firewall (same hose that goes to the oil separator in the valve cover) is in good shape and the barb is secure in the throttle body. Also check all the vacuum lines connected to the SAI at both ends.

The oil separator is built into the connector for the vent pipe on the passenger-side valve cover. Drill it out and replace with a PCV. (There are a few good write-ups on here describing which one(s) are plug-and-play).
