I would also like to complete the 60k service myself but dont know how. Most ive done is change the oil myself. If I buythe workshop manual (the one that retails for$100)for an 02 d2 or a rave cd will it show me how to do the work and what tools and fluids to use?

all of that information can be found on here or in the RAVE cd, which you can download for free. Not saying its a bad idea to buy the workshop manual, but you might as well get what you can out of the free resources available to you.

The RAVE CD is the work shop manual in PDF format, it is free. There is a post on here from today with the free download.

Download the RAVE manual and plan to purchase the workshop manual if you do any sort of off roading, or long trips. Even if you can't do the repair, like while out on the trail, someone who stops to help might be able to IF you have the manual.

Wow Disco Mike, THANK YOU for this list!

My DiscoII doesn't quite have 60k miles, but it's almost 9 years old, so I am going to begin this major fluid replacement when I get back home. I'm going to start buying the stuff here and there.

Mike- is there anything else you would add to your list, in retrospect?

THANK YOU!!! What a great list.

A couple 'post-shower' questions:

My Disco has 47k miles.

1) The owner before me (#2) on mine installed a K&N air filter. I've heard talk on here about how the filtration oil possibly accelerates wear on oxygen sensors. Is this verified enough to be considered true? If so, is it still worth it? I'd hate to remove it, instead I'd like to just do a recharge.

2) Mike, in your opinion, what is the likelihood of being able to avoid the 3 Amigos and the Head Gasket break with proper maintenance?

The first guy, it appears, changed all of the fluids including the brake fluid and the coolant at 27,000 miles. He wrote some of this stuff down on a lined sheet of paper and I found it while reading through the owners manual. Do you think his changing the fluid then, (no date) and my changing it from here on out will be enough to avoid the head gasket corruption?

Is it ever possible to avoid the 3 Amigos? If not, at what miles / age does it usually happen?

Thanks guys.

Pat

D2Fever-I'm not sure about the 3 amigos stuff but I would definitely recommend taking out the K&N Air filter. The biggest problem with it is that it can take out your MAF. The oil can get into the sensor and completely ruin it. You barely get any HP out of it anyway, and the OEM air filters are only like $8.

Ditto
As for the head gasket, pretty high % it will fail, no mater waht you do.
The trio will stay off if you use good brake pads/ quiet, no squeak and little or no dust and you change the brake fluid every 20,000 miles.

Pat-Change your coolant every two years, as well as the brake fluid.
Living on a dirt road the 3-amigos may pop up sooner for you.
Dump the K&N air filter.
