Default 94 DI Transmission Drain and Fill

Ok who has done this recently???

Ive got 2 gallons of DEXRON III.. I know the vehicle wont take this much, but can anyone tell me from experiance how many quarts of Fluid approximatly should the tranny take from a simple Drain and Fill??

My guess is 6..

Just would like to have a ballpark figure for when I go to fill it...

How dirty is your old ATF?
If, real dirty you may want to do a second change a week later to help move additional dirty fluid out of the system.
Lucky for you, you have a dip stick so there is very little change of not filling it to the proper levels, something us D2 owners can't do.
In your case, yo will be a little over 5 quarts.
Good luck,
Mike

I just did my 99 DI about two weeks ago. It took about 5 quarts. Be sure to check the stick, with the truck running from about the 4th quart on. It is easy to overfill and then a bit of a pain to get under and drain some off. Also, be sure to get a funnel to help pour the new fluid in, one with a nice large opening. Best of luck. Phil

WTF!!!!!!!!!!

You have got to be kidding me??
Where would you add the fluid on a D2??!?!

Psychic powers required to fill it?? What if its been leaking??
You have to drain every bit of it so you know how much to put in..
Reminds me of that riddle, you have a 3 gallon container and a 5 gallon container and you need exactly 4 gallons of transmission fluid....

I knew mercedes had gone to a copletely closed system..
No contamination..

Bud had no Idea about this with the DII..

Every Day I hear something else that makes me so greatfull I lucked into this low mile DI!!

And Yes.. Depending on what the fluid looks like when it comes out, I might do another after a decent interval..

DII's have a check/fill plug on the side of the tranny like what you have on your diffs.
Just one of the many bright ideas that BMW worked into the Disco, the non greasable double cardon is another one.

I'm a bit confused.
5 quarts? of ATF but in the 60K maintenance checklist the ATF is 12 Qts (11.35 liters) in the tranny.
I know I'm missing something. Please enlighten me.
Thanks.

You need to be careful when you read the 60k list, take out what does not apply to you and add what does.
You need to make sure that you use the correct fluids for YOUR truck.
But to answer your question, 6 qts for the tranny and 6qts for the engine flush.

My driveway is not 100% level, but I drained and added just under 5 quarts.. I will check it tomorrow with the truck facing the other way..

Fluid looked Red coming out of the pan.. I pulled a small sample of the old fluid..
And in the bottle it looks pretty dark....

I guess I will be doing another drain and fill next weekend if the weather is as nice as it was today..

I love the fact that they put a magnet on the drain for the tranny.. I cant understand why they wouldnt do the same for the Oil Drain Plug...

After having so many vehicles that are a cobbled mix of Metric and Standard, I figured the Brittish would build one with all Standard.. I guess I was wrong.. Drain plug is 17mm..
Vexing...
Why cant it be all of one or all of another..
Grrrr
