Default '95 Disco won't lock or go high/low

Hey guys,
I just recently picked up a '95 Disco because my M3 just doesn't cut it in the Kansas City winters ( just moved here 2 months ago from North Carolina).
I picked it up in Charleston, SC for $1200.00! Just over 150K miles and for what I paid I'm extremely happy. Pictures; ( http://www.facebook.com/album.php?ai...9&id=724450890 )
I haven't had a 4x4 rig in over three years so it's been interesting getting used to a truck again.
It runs great and has quite a bit of new parts; Distributor/plugs/wires, alternator, starter, tires, brakes, radiator, etc.
It's got a leak from in between the oil pan and transmission bell housing. I'm hoping it's just the oil pan gasket ( it looks a little rough ). That and a small power steering leak are the only major issues.

Anyways, I took it on some trails today and when I tried to lock it up it wouldn't budge... I tried going to 4wd low and it was really hard to push. I consulted the manual and followed the suggestions to get it into gear it wouldn't budge. Eventually I got it into neutral but didn't want to force it into 4wd low and then be screwed.
It drives PERFECT in 4wd high.
Is this a common problem with Discovery's or is there something majorly wrong here?

Thanks in advance guys!
I'm excited to get into modding this thing! I'm building a snorkel right now and I'm gonna put a lift kit on it by mid january!

Also,
What kind of MPG do you guys get on average? I've heard rumors of mid 20's (highway) but I think it's going to be more like the mid-high teens.

Your linkage is probably just seized, some one else will have to give more detail on that, I don't know too much. Gas mileage, I get 12-15. In case you didn't know you absolutely must run premium gas. highest octane you can

Yeah I found that out the hard way.... I went through a whole tank of 87 on my way back from Charleston.
17 out of the 22 cars I've owned in the past four years have required premium so I'm used to it... just didn't think this car would require it!

I did a little bit of searching on the CDL and noticed that many people recommend shifting into locked mode while slightly rolling in neutral?
I would be willing to bet this thing hasn't been moved out of un-locked high for a LONG time... Any suggestions to get the linkage to free up a bit?

Thanks,
Michael

yeah, when you switch to Lowyou have to put it into N, and let it roll w/o brake applied. then shift the 4x4 from hi to N to low, it should work smoother then. if i dont roll, i can barley pull mine at all. my disco hasthe factorysticker with the 4x4 directions right above the shifter, yours might have been removed.

as for gas millage, 12 city, 15-16 highway, 14 towing. disels get around mid 20's to 30, but there not sold in the america's. the oil leak could be your head gaskets, thats VERY common in all landrovers, they leak fluid like theres no tommarow. head gaskets are a $1,200 job. i just had mine done a few mounths ago under warrentee.

It's too low on the motor to be the head gasket.
Plus our motors are a pretty different design, no?

Alright, I got it to go into 4wd high and low. Having the car slightly rolling made it work like a charm!
I still can't get it to move left at ALL. It will move forward and back with a little bit of force and is slowly getting easier but no play at all left-right.
