2001 SE7- Accessed from the top. Removed T-case solenoid. Functions correctly. Lubed every linkage and left to soak overnight. Wondering what else I might need to look at that could be causing the no-shift from high to low.

i read that it can get crudded up and stuck, especially when not often exercised and on those salty northern michigan roads. imo, the soaking is a good first course of action.

the cable can also freeze in the sleeve, if it doesn't free up, you may want to disconnect the cable. That way you will know if the problem is in the shifter/cable or transfer case.

Hoping the soak works!! In case it doesn't, do I disconnect the cable at the transfer case selector? The cable does currently move by the shift lever- about a 1/4 to 3/8". I see zero movement of the cable at the selector. Can the selector at the transfer case be operated by other means? Pliers, 30lb sledge etc??

Disconnect the cable where it attaches to the transfer case. Then try to move the shifter with the solenoid retracted. If it moves then you know the shifter and cable are good and you issue resides in the transfer case.

If you need a shifter and cable, I have one from when I installed a 04 cdl shifter. There is a bolt that holds the cable to the top of the case. It is in a very tight area to get to. You need to access it from the top of the case.

If the cable is the problem, consider taking this time to install a CDL linkage for nearly 50% more traction.

Check the oil level in the transfer case. If it is very very low then you may have gears which are binding.

Thanks for the replies!! I was able to free up the cable without removing it. I used a craftsman auto hammer on the steel reinforced cable. Applied just enough pressure to get the "hammer" to impact. Lubed the selector on the transfer case and the shifter components. Little time and patience and all is working smooth again...
