okay, like I mentioned, Im not sure about the D1's, was just going off what ive had to do. about the coolant, that too was just what i know with the D2 as you have to use premium gas, I just fig'd dexcool was what they say you must use.

Check out the 60K service thread. This is a must for new to you Rovers. Keep in mind that yours takes ATF instead of Power steering fluid. Don't worry about the driveshaft, you have fittings (grease every oil change).

Keep an eye out for leaks, especially coolant leaks.

The reason these trucks are going so low is mpg and maintenance costs. Do the 60K and it will extend the life no matter what your mileage is. When you have a problem with something, post on here and someone will help you out.

Sorry to say, but I think you paid at the top end for your truck...

candiman,

thanks for your thoughts. I don't intend to do the work myself, but I do have an able mechanic here, as I stated, he owns one just like mine, but a '96. I just put a few hundred miles on it today, and I keep telling myself this is the most comfortable vehicle I have ever owned. And I really don't care about resale value, as long as I get my use out of it.

yup, I think I could have gotten it for less, now that I have searched around, but I am not complaining, it's a great vehicle, and I am lovin' it!

If you like it, thats all that matters. I keep getting told to sell my truck with a bad head gasket, internal leakage... just put some new brakes on it... I say screw that I love MY rover and if I ever sold it I would just miss it soon thereafter and would want another one

I bought a 99 Disco I and Ive been very pleased with it. Its a much simpler vehicle than my 95 Range Rover, no air shocks, incredibly annoying computer system, etc. Ive been getting 16-18 mpg and thats not too bad for a V8. My wife's Nissan Xterra got worse than that and it was only a 6 cyl and not nearly as off road capable. I've had zero problems with it and Ive hauled trailers, taken it off road(I live on 45 acres in rural Missouri) and driven it on 200 mile trips a number of times. I do maintain it myself. Parts are easy to get, Atlantic British etc.

greetings, it's been a while since I have logged on here... but since my OP in June, I haven't changed my mind about my Disco, it is still the best vehicle I have ever owned. Have put about 6K miles on it in 3 1/2 months.

I bought a little 14' Burro and am getting ready to hit the road for a few weeks. Any tips on towing would be appreciated. Tow weight is about 1500lbs. I had a devil of a time getting the wiring done... or should I say it cost a small fortune. Had to have a relay of some sort installed in order for the brake lights to work. Also, the wire that charges the trailer batter cost a small fortune. it was one of those deals, it was better to ask my wife for forgiveness than permission.....

am headed up to Oregon and Washington.

I've had mine 6ft in the air off a sand dune, pulled a hummer H3 out of the sand, crahsed it several times and broken/replaced most of the transmission doing stupid stuff. To be honest the Disco 1 is pretty much bullet proof underneath and with the fuel prices here in the UAE being about $2 a gallon (imperial gallon) its pretty cheap on/off road motoring.

WELCOME !!
and Ditto to all said above !!
check out the sticky for the 60k service , follow that and you will likely head off 90% of the service issues you might encounter. Rovers are well built and durable, so much so that many previous owners don't do the required maintenance because they "observed" no problems and got away without it.
good luck ...and don't be afraid to ask questions...we are'nt
