99 Disco II - Los Angeles, CA
Hi, I'm new to the forum. I just picked up a 99 Disco II, it was super cheap and I drove it over an hour home. It does have a tick, sounds like its underneath the drivers side. Hard to tell if its coming from the torque converter or if it's bearings or something of that sort. Wish I would have known to check the crank while i had the oil pan off! I just changed the oil pump, timing chain, and replaced the appropriate gaskets and what not. I was hoping the the tick was from the timing chain or oil pump, but they looked fine. I was wondering if there was any one in the LA area who likes working on these things that i could bounce some questions and ideas off. Thanks!
Tick if minor could simply just be the exhaust manifold gaskets at the engine, or the top of the cats/y pipe. Very very very common place for exhaust leaks aka ticks from the lower end. Now if you hear very loud ticking up near the intake you probably have more serious issues.
First thing you need to check with any used LR = the status of the cooling system. Look to see what color thermostat you have, what color coolant, and the level of the coolant. Then get yourself either a cheap OBD2 bluetooth unit you can monitor stuff via your smart phone or use a decent scantool like the iCarsoft LRII or 930 (there are a few others which work good as well).

Hey! thanks for responding! I notice youre in Beaumont! I'm from Austin, I'm currently in LA, but go back to Texas all the time. I didn't mention in my first post that i changed the coolant, Thermo (180 from Lucky 8), and upper tubes and i have an ultra gauge hooked up to it. I was just looking through the forum to add and oil pressure sensor. I was hoping the ultra gauge could read that for me....but I do hear a tick at the manifold but it sounds more like a combo of injectors and a bit of lifters. There is a much more obvious sound I am trying to track down, If i climb under the truck it sounds like its near the oil pan or torque converter, but driver side. Outside of the vehicle I hear it on the driver side and not so much on the passenger side. I'll check for exhaust leaks now. Do you have a method for check them?
thanks!
thanks!
I personally slap a half a can of seafoam thru the intake, shut it off, and 15min later crank it up and the leaks will easily present themselves lol. I was born in Austin, and have just moved all over TX my entire life. I'd still be in central TX, but my wife is from SETX so guess where I ended up staying? lol.
Sounds like you are on top of it, What weight oil did you put in it? Thin can be noisy in these.
Ticks can also come from vacuum leaks especially around any SAI lines.

I got it to play. Sounds pretty good to me vs the dreaded knock from say a sleeve. The little Purge Control Valve can also be loud and tick, but from the sound of it I'd say the lower exhaust gaskets are either blown out or the nuts holding them on have worked loose.
