Default 99 disco an insane buy?

Hello all,

I have asked around and everybody says to stay away from Discos. I was thinking of picking up this 2nd vehicle to get big stuff from IKEA, be the bus to take coworkers to lunch, and general fun. I found this 99 Disco, haven't gone to look at it yet but she looks great on the web, what do you guys think? Stay away from it and find something better? I won't pay more than $4k for it, I'd like to get it for $3.5k.

My friend has a 1998 that she cares for a lot, it needs lot of attention, but that's why she loves it.

I would buy it if they can meet your price. I Bought mine to use as a weekend driver but I find myself driving it more than that. When you buy a used car thats what you get. It will need repairs and this web site has alot of good information to help in the repairs. You can search this forum and find the list of things to do to it like change all the fluids and get the carbon off of your valves. I would do it and dont look back. Enjoy the ride

That's a pretty good deal IF the service records are right. I got my 99 for $4900 with 100k miles and an inch thick stack of LR dealer service records and not all the options you have. I still had to put 2600 into it though. You should plan on that too. Here were some issues with mine:

Replaced Left rear axle seal. (Stains on the axle behind the wheel.)
Replaced Rear Diff. (High pitched whine from the rear, sounded like a jet engine.)
Replaced Timing cover seal. (LR mechanic found a small coolant drip, followed it up to this. )
Replaced Radiator (was leaking slightly on the right hand side. remove shields to review)

What I know I need to do:
Transfer case leaking. 1200 quote to reseal it. Going to tray the plate seal fix first.
Front diff is whining and pinion seal is leaking. Prolly $600 or more.

It had the Header seals, valve cover, drive shaft, and regular maintenance etc done before I got it.

Hope this helps.

Because that one is 7 pass it will have the air ride suspension, that will be problematic when it gets old, it can be replaced with coil springs for not much money.
The saging rear step just needs a new shock, pretty cheap fix.
You MUST use premium gas.
These trks have a personallity, you either love them or you dont.
Do a search on this forum for driveshaft, u-joints, coolant leak.
To get an idea of parts and acc. www.atlanticbritish.com.

Is it me or does this have the 3 amigos? It looks like the TC and ABS lights are on, but the steering wheel is covering the HDC light.

It also looks like it's missing the front pass seat control *****, though not a big deal.

GOOD CALL D2G!!! Because the tach is not at zero that means that the enigne is running, and yes, it looks like the three amigos is on, also looks like the check engine light too.
And yes, the pass seat controls are missing. I would inquire about these things and ask them what they are willing to do about it.
If they say nothing then ask them to take a couple grand off the price, since you dont know what is wrong (wink, wink) or how much to fix.
The seat contols can be had for cheap. The check engine light is probally a mis fire, which means it needs a tune up.
And the three amigos is either brake dust or a bad wheel speed sensor.
Take it for a test drive and have the CEL scanned at AutoZone and see what they say. They cant read the ABS codes.
If you do a search on here for the three amigos you can educate yourself.
And remember, as far as the saleman is consearned, you have no idea what is wrong with the trk and/or how much to fix it.
You can save serious money if you are educated about the car you are looking to buy.

I just bought a 99 Disco series 1. I had been driving it 2 weeks, with no problems, when the water pump went out and took the serpintene belt with it. I bought after market from O'Riely and although they just showed 1 pump for series 1 & 2, it seemed the same. Everything seems ok but it keeps getting hot. Am not sure belt is routed correctly but none of the dealers in the area seem to have a diagram. Anyboby have a diagram or any ides. I have gone beyond fustration and dealer is too expensive for this po boy.

In '99 LR finshed producing the D1 and relesed the D2 mid year. All D1's have the CDL hooked to the t-case shifter. Only the '04 D2's have the same functionality (though it is cable operated, not mechanical like the D1). Up mid year '01 the D2 t-case has the capability to engage CDL. Those models ('99-mid '01) can be retrofitted with either a D1 or '04 linkage. The later '01-03 D2's had the CDL completely removed from the t-case, necessetating a total swap for the functionality. The reasoning behind removing the linkage in the D2's is because of the addition of the TC.
