Default 99 discovery transmission question...

ok i just got this 99 LR discovery in on a trade, it has the 4.0 v8 and an auto

my question is the transmission only has park and reverse, no other gears are working....

my questions are: what model trans does this thing have?
is it the actual trans that im having trouble with
or something else like a shifter etc...

any information or tips will be appreciated, thanks

Is it a D1 or D2? Both were made in 99 and both had the 4.0 V8.

You need to check the fluid level first, how you do that depends on if it has flush mounted door handles or ones that stick out.

That is a DI.
DII's are wider and longer, have more electrics, LCD odometer, full automatic HVAC and a electronically controlled transmission and no dipstick to check the trans fluid level.
The DII ran from 1999.5-2004.

The DI from 1989-1999.
It has a dipstick to check the trans fluid level.
The ZF transmission is pretty much bullet proof, so if it is not low on fluid then the filter is clogged.
Once you get it home I would change the trans fluid and filter, drive it for a 1,000 miles and then change the fluid again.

so you think its just a filter a fluid change fix? that would be great conisdering a trans rebuild is anywhere from $1000 to $1500

anybody else have any say?

thanks guys!

As much as I hate to agree with Spike, a filter and fluid change should do the trick. I would bet when you pull the dipstick if there is any fluid on it it will be black.

Hey, whats wrong with agreeing with me? LOL

If you do need a new one dont get yours rebuilt, just buy a used one.

I agree the fluid and filter change should be the first ting to try. If you do need a tranny you can find a used one for around $600 bucks with a warranty, for a couple hundred more you can get a three year warranty with some low miles on it. Good luck and let us know how it works out.
