ABS sensor lube
the Front left ABS sensor is giving a low output code. The sensor looks OK and the resistance is 1040 Ohms so should be good. The toothed ring is clean and there is no indication of grease or gear lube in there can, anyone recommend which grease/oil to use?
The sensor came of the FR hub that I replaced because the bearing was shot but the ABS sensor appeared to be OK so I switched it with the FL, which was indicating low output. There were a couple of copper shims under the bad one I took off so I put them under the replacement one but did not resolve the problem so I removed the shims but still no good signal. I have read in previous posts that puting a glob of gear oil or grease in the hole can fix the problem (possibly the gear oil makes for a better conduction of the magnetic field between the sensor and toothed gear?) My question is, is it regular oil/grease or synthetic or lithium based product?
Well dielectric grease is a non-conductor so that will defeat the purpose of that which you are aiming for.
I just googled and saw way more than I ever wanted to know. Pretty simple.

I am assuming dielectric grease is not the right type since the ABS sensor presumably generates an electrical pulse induced by a magnetic field generated by the toothed rotor in the hub; although someone with more knowledge can may be explain it better?
Can someone please confirm this about needing grease/oil packed inside of the hubs for the ABS sensors? I'm reviving this topic because I plan on cleaning my ABS sensors since I have the brakes off.
I've been reading on forums to add grease/gear oil inside of the hubs where the ABS sensor goes.
I can't find anywhere in the RAVE manual or the LR technical information instructions http://landroverclubvi.weebly.com/up...eplacement.pdf to use grease/gear oil inside of the hubs for the ABS sensor. The only info I did find was to grease the ABS sensor itself before inserting it into the hub and o-ring before tightening the 10mm bolt to 13ft/lbs.
I used to working on diesel power and generation equipment and those units use magnetic pick ups (MPUs) to sense speed. The MPUs work "somewhat" the same way as the Disco's ABS sensor. The MPUs receive electrical impulses from the engine's flywheel ring gear teeth to sense the engine's speed for synchronization of the electrical system. The MPUs require to have the flywheel's clean for better electrical impulses. Using Oil/Grease would collect metal shavings in between the flywheel's teeth and throws off the MPU's "sensing" of engine speed.
Thanks!

That's the way I replace ABS sensors. Using the same logic you stated re: boogering up the pickup, adding(packing) grease is only going to cause problems. I've seen someone do this on a GMC pickup and in short order the pedal was pulsating because the ABS sensor could not "read" the reluctor ring. Same concept could happen with the LR, so no grease for me.

I’d grease them lightly to help with installing them, but I can tell you from experience on fixing D2 ABS issues that bad hubs allowing gear oil into the hub = 3 amigo’s. Also I’ve seen hubs packed with so much grease the ABS would constantly apply the brake to that wheel from false readings.
Greas em lightly to install them (grease on the side of the sensor vs tip), and use a small amount of loctite on the allen bolt securing it and call it a day.
