I need to remove the LF ABS sensor (and probably replace it). Everything I've read here and in other forums says the hub must be removed to remove the sensor, but today I found the LR TSB linked below, which says in step 9, "Release the front hub from the swivel hub sufficiently to allow the ABS sensor harness to be removed." There's no mention of removing and replacing the stake nut.

I've seen pics and write-ups showing how to replace the hub, but I don't quite understand how it's supposed to work to pull the hub out enough the remove the ABS sensor without removing the stake nut. Will the axle be sliding out partially from where its splines engage the diff to give enough clearance, without coming out too far?

If that's the case, how far can it come out before I create another problem? An inch or two? I don't have any experience replacing axles.

And finally, does this method carry much risk of buggering the oil seal? Thanks.

 

I've never "just" replaced a senser (that l can remember anyway), always replacing a hub when l've messed with sensor harness. But, do remember it being a tight fit, getting harness wire through access opening in swivel hub/spider and if loosen the bolts is neccesary it would not surprise me. With that being said, loosing the bolts enough to slide hub out of bore/mounting area will not allow it to move far enough to damage axle seal. Axle shaft will still be nutted to hub and they will move together, prying the hub out even an inch or so shouldn't affect seal.

 

Thanks Deputy. I presumed that was the case, otherwise the TSB would have had additional instruction, but it's good to have your confirmation.

It turns out I don't need to do this right now, but I'm nonetheless glad I unearthed this TSB for posterity.

 

Basically, yes. Once you unbolt the four bolts that hold the hub to the steering knuckle, pulling on the hub will pull the axle out too. Just pull it out enough to slip the sensor through. You're talking about maybe 1cm of clearance needed. NBD. No risk of damaging the oil seals either.

 

What is the grease that is supposed to be used with the ABS sensor? I don't believe my sensor came with the grease. Would some dielectric grease work?
