AC switch gone

I have a 96 Disco and wanted to know if I can bypass the switch on the dash to get electric to the AC unit? I check on buying and used dealers want me to buy the whaole assembly for $100 bucks. The vehicle is rough and dont mind something barbaric, but I don't have any schematic for the electrical system. I tried touching up a wire or two on the switch harness. Burned a fuse and quit. I'd rather be hot than walking. Thanks Jack
