Default ACE Pump question

I have a question about the Discovery 2 ACE pump. I was told that my pump was bad, it was very stiff to turn and had a bit of a lurch. It was like it was building and releasing pressure.

I just received my new pump from LR Direct and found that it is also stiff and has a bit of a lurch to it.

Is this the way the pump should feel? I know that a power steering pump will be a bit stiff, but the ACE pump requires about double the force to turn.

Thanks for any information.

I had the same question when I replaced mine -- an unnecessary replacement as it turns out. Both the old and the new-to-me pumps were stiff to turn and had a lurch (a great description).

Thanks for the quick reply.

Okay, I guess my next question would be about the noise. It is very loud on turns, but the pump is quiet when the truck is idling. Is that the normal sound? Everyone that I have run into with a Disco 2 has removed the ACE system, so I have nothing to compare it to.

Are you sure it's the ACE system that's making the noise? I was sure that mine was the problem but it turned out to actually be the steering pump.
The ACE system really doesn't make any noise. If you're getting noise when making low-speed turns I would again suspect the steering pump because the ACE system should only be coming on to deal with body roll, which you're not going to have when going slow.

I am certain that it is the ACE system because I bypassed the pump while I was waiting for the new one to be shipped. With the pump bypassed the truck is quiet.
Since owning the D2 I have replaced the high pressure and return hoses, but noise has remained constant. After meeting a couple other owners who removed the ACE and installed roll bars, I made the assumption that ACE was just noisy, but I suppose it is possible that there is air trapped somewhere in the system.

The pump can make some noise. My 99 with ACE works perfectly and at idle it makes a little noise. I know ACE works as I can take a corner like a mad man vs any of my other D2's.
