ACR engines an Intercoolers
Alright I just had a long over the phone conversation with Bill from Great Basin Rovers. I actually ment to call Great Plain Rovers to talk about their engines but I confused the two companies and ended up talking with Bill.
So Ive learned of a third option for buying a re manufactured Discovery 2 engine. A English company called ACR. Ive also learned that early D2 models came with a built in intercooler which supposedly helps keep the engine oil tempature down. Apparently the intercoolers were removed for later model D2's. So my first question is why? Why was the intercooler removed? Can a early D2 intercooler be fitted to a 2004 D2? If not how about an after market intercooler? Does anyone here have experience with them?
Ive also learned that the snorkel can contribute to cooler engine temperatures because it sucks in cold air from outside whereas the factory airbox setup only sucks in hot air from the engine bay.
So it would appear that there may be 3 ways to keep our D2 engines running cooler.
1
TD5 180 degree thermostat
2
Snorkel properly sealed
3
Engine intercooler
We talked a little bit about Great Plains and Bill seems to really dislike their business. He also frowns on the Atlantic British engine program. But he spoke very highly of ACR engines. He said they have the most experience in the field and that they offer complete engines for slightly cheaper than what Atlantic British is selling their own engines. He will be emailing me contact info for the owner of ACR so I will have to have a conversation with them about their engines and see where they fit in. I guess GBR will buy ACR engines and they will install them for you but they will not ship out engines to buyers. Local only. So have any of you delt with ACR? What is your opinion of their engines?

Snorkel won't lower engine temps, and through some quick research it would appear only Td5s had intercoolers.
Never heard of ACR, but Bill is pretty trustworthy.

Yes^
To edit my statement(sorry!)
It's very odd but this is how it appears:
The engine oil cooler switched purposes to a transmission cooler in the 02/03 switch.
So it appears if you added it to your 04, you would no longer have it as a transmission cooler.

Why couldn't you retro fit a 99-02 oil and tranny cooler setup and have both?
Answered my own question with a search. Its more involved than just adding a cooler and lines. You need a front cover from a DII with a oil cooler. Here is some more info: https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...03-04-a-39619/
