Default advice for a new disco owner?

Hello, I am new here. I've been eyeing LR for many (20+ Years) and I am finally in a position where I can pursue it. I bought an '02 Disco with 100K miles. Looks like the regular maintenance has been done.

Apart from head gaskets that still need to be addressed, are there other prudent investments that I should take on right away? I've saved up about $4K to $5K for repairs and/or add ons. I suspect I will put about 5 to 8 thousand miles on this per year.

Thank you in advance and I appreciate your advice!

Best,
KlamathMatt

Do the Major service sticky at the top of the forum. It is a good comprehensive list of maintenance items to go through. If it were me, I would first look at getting an Ultra gauge or other live data scanner. It helps keep an eye on your temps so you don't cook the engine. I would then put in a 180 degree thermostat. Also immediately look at your front drive shaft. If original, it will need to be rebuilt or replaced.

Sorry... what is an ultra gauge? And the 180 degree thermostat? What will that do? Thanks

Ultra gauge will plug in to the obd2 port under the steering wheel and tell you information like temperature in digital fashion (accurate) and allow you to read & clear codes read o2 sensors, mpg, mph, rpm, and alot more just a very helpful tool. The front drive shaft is non serviceable (meaning you cant grease it) so if will fail and knock all around resulting in a hole in the transmission and around 6k in repair. So for $300 dollars you can avoid all those headaches and worries. Other than that just paying attention to the cooling system and you'll be fine!
