Advice on rebuilding front drive-shaft with greaseable u-joints
Dropped my shaft off at the shop this morning and they informed me that it was not the original shaft. Went ahead and had it rebuilt anyway. They had it ready by lunch - cost $156.00 out the door - greasable joints, new centering ball. Stopped by the dealership to get new nylocks since none of the hardware stores had the 10mm small-head nuts - add another $17.50 - total $173.50 and two hours of my time for removal/installation. And of course, now I can't find the needle adapter for my grease gun....
i dont know if this is the same one but here it is

Which of the rebuild parts have you guys had luck with? Which u-joints do you recommend and which centering ball? I checked with three shops today on a rebuild. Oceanside Driveshafts, Driveline in San Diego and a shop in El Cajon, East County Driveline. Oceanside wants about $300 plus r and r. Driveline wanted about $275 plus $70 for r and r. East County said that they could do the u-joints but wouldn't do the centering ball. Said they couldn't find a good replacement part. Recommended that I buy a new driveshaft from the dealer. Any other options? I know Tom Woods is out there but for my use it seems like a bit of overkill. Thanks Phil

Well..I decided to try to get the final word on what's what relative to the recent several threads on DII front propshafts.
This information is direct from Neapco and Spicer technical support.
1. Neapco PN 1-0005, also sold at Advance Auto boxed as PDQ 1-0005.
This u-joint is made by Neapco and sold with the Neapco box, and also reboxed as PDQ for Advance. PDQ u-joints are normally not made by Neapco, but as the volume is low, Neapco makes these particular ones.
(Note: {10-26-08} It appears that Advance still carries them in the store. Autozone does not)
2. Spicer 5-4x. Still shown as active in the Spicer sytem, but not made by Spicer. They are purchaced from an outside vendor. This might explain the conflicting reports of where the zerk fitting is located (end cap vs. cross) depending on which batch/vendor they come from at the time.
Neapco's PN for the center bearing kit is 7-0081NG. It must have the NG suffix to denote it being non-greasble. The 7-0081 has different dimensions. The 7-0081NG crosses to the Precision and NAPA 617

Tom and/or others, of the various brands and model numbers listed, are any of them better/longer lasting/better fitting than the others? As for the centering ball, is the nongrease model apprpriate to use? generally what are the parts priced at? I will try to check with the local parts houses today. Thanks Phil
I prefer the Neapco for two reasons, the zerk is in the end cap which makes greasing it easier. There is no drilling in the valley of the u-joint cross to weaken it. Although I wouldn't hesitate to use them if I needed to.
Prices for Neapco are about $25-$30 from a driveline shop, or $13 from Advance Auto Parts for the same u-joint boxed up as PDQ.
Like I said, the centering kit is Neapco 7-0081NG or Precision and NAPA 617.
Price of that is around $30.

The Duralast aren't actually Neapco u-joints (I looked at one and I think they are GMB maybe). Autozone used to carry them and is just using the same part number even though they are a different make now.
