Aftermarket Foglights 55W
Can you wire aftermarket foglights to stock wiring from factory foglights and use the stock switch? I no longer use the stock foglights on my 03 and the pigtails are tucked behind my steel bumper. Can these be wired directly to an aftermarket foglight say a Hella 4000?
Yes. You can run the stock wiring to the new fog lights; keeping in mind the longer you make the wire the less amperage it can withstand. You can also use the stock wiring to switch the relay for the auxillary lights.
Should be fine for bumper mount fogs, but if you are going to the roof use a relay. Stock bulbs are 55w so as long as you don't piggyback and disconnect the stock ones and keep your wire run short you're fine.
I was aiming for a set of Hella 4000 or Hella 1000 Black Magic's. The wire is there but would have to extend it with connectors to meet to the center of the bumper at the 'A' light bar. I thought about the Terrafirma Spot lights but I'm not crazy about the front lettering and silver casing. I also read that they cannot be submerged if I ever advanced my D2 to that type of ability.
I'd install a relay as ZG said. The stock wiring probably isn't large enough even for the stock fogs for optimal voltage drop limits.
As for submerging your DII, the ZF doesn't do well with water in it, so I'd give careful thought before deciding to risk wiping out your transmission. If there are any leaks where water can get it you're talking a new gearbox. I know at least one person who went down that road and just ended up installing an R-380
