Default Air Compressor Installation

Just installed a used compressor, old one fried. When I took the old one out and disconnected the lines, all of the air (what was left in the bags) leaked out so now the truck is sitting on the axle, as expected. Installed the new/used compressor and started the truck. The compressor is running for about 3-5 sec and then turns off like it thinks that it is at the proper height. Am I missing a step? Do I need to jack the rear up first so there is no pressure on the bags to start? Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks again,
Seth
