The seal on the SLS is just a round neoprene 'washer' on a piston and not like normal compressors (although I have never seen inside one so I'm guessing) They efficiently keep the SLS pumped up and can achieve 10bar (circa 150psi) according to RAVE, but they are relatively slow even pumping a couple of air springs up. I would guess a tire is maybe 20-40 times the volume of the air springs. I think, as Dusty says, they would be inefficient.

 

I figured that would be the case, but I was thinking how handy that would be for those who've removed their bags. Or, if system was still in tact, just tap a valve into the lines and draw off it.

 

I've run my cheapo $50ish Harbor Freight compressor for almost an hour straight pumping up tires at Pismo and it's never failed me. Hard to beat that bang for the buck

 

You're dead right there etsZac. I used my 20-30 year old cheapo £15 compressor the other day to stick about 15psi in a 255 50 R19, it did take about 10-15 minutes of rattling around on the ground before it hit the right pressure. I was just too lazy to open up the garage and use the proper airline as we were on our way out for the day all dressed up smart, unusually, in levis of course though).

 

I've used ARB compressors, cheap Harbor Freight compressors, and they all work fine, but nothing compares to a Co2 tank when it comes to speed.

 

I just bought a high volume cheepo one from Walmart today and put it into my rear storage compartment. We're headed to Sand Mountain in Nevada next weekend. I'll find out quickly how well it works. There's other air there if it doesn't work well, just in case.

Hi SS, be wary of using the sealant like Slime in tyres. The breakdown service used some on the wife's Smart Car, it destroyed the tire internally. I have read about using this stuff somewhere else and it wasn't a good write up about it.

 

Thank you for the heads up. Yeah, through experience, I've learned to not use it in car tires. I now use it in quads and sand buggies, but even then, only for emergencies. Nothing on the road though.

I just happened to get this one because of the price, and it happened to come with it and a nice carry bag.
