Was time to change the oil on the D2 and I figured I would do the air filter as well since I have no idea how long its been there. Pepboys only had Purolators, so that's what I got.

When I took the old orange rimmed one out, there were pretty obvious differences. The Purolator had fewer folds and was 1/2" less "deep".

Anyone have issues after using the Purolator?

 

Like voting in Chicago, do it early and often. In air filters, there is no substitute for surface area. It will trap the same size dirt, just can't hold as much of it.

Aren't you proud that the truck is still running often enough to need an oil filter change?

 

So it is worse, but only in the sense it has to be changed more often?

I dunno if proud is the right term....guardedly optimistic is more apropos.

Still, its a daily driver with no codes, no ticking, and ,with the OEM gray, runs mostly 185-195. Can't complain too much. Confident enough that I just dropped $800 on a new set of tires

what did i miss?
I order, in bulk, some Chinese paper ones, offered by beck/arnley.
I thought as long as it was clean, i'm good to go.
Is there really one better than another?
i read bad about k&n, but not much else.

 

Clean is probably most important. I've had some pretty cheap filters though sometimes. For example most Honda filters have rigid plastic frames with rubber gaskets, but I've made the mistake of getting a Fram once or twice that was floppy foam. It's fine if that's how the airbox is designed, not so good if it's not.

The OE land rover filters have foam gaskets so no reason to worry there I guess.

Change is good. Don't let them get black.

 

Purolator or Wix are both good filters. You can also get Mann filters from Amazon for about $16.50 delivered.
