Im thinking about buying an disco with a bad engine for pennies on the dollar. Does anyone know if these (link below) are worth the money? I seem to find discos with bad engines going for 2K in the southeast, so would it be worth adding in one of these to get another 150K of a 2003-04 disco.

I currently have an LR3 and LR2, and would like a really cool trail truck.

could also get a running 99-01 with the CDL transfer case and the 4.0 engine which has less issues for around 4-5k.

Agreed...$7K for the new engine + cost of the truck seems like a lot for a trail rig. And after all is done, it won't take you anywhere your LR3 can't go, and you could fix a lot of scratches for that much coin. If that's not an option, an earlier DII or even DI would be a better choice.

However, to answer your actual question, I have the GPR version of that same AB engine, and it's wonderfully reliable, slightly more powerful and fuel efficient (15.6 mpg avg). I have no doubt that the AB engine is on par, however they can't match GPRs 3 year warranty by a long shot!

Honestly, I would rather have an 04 Disco and let give the LR3 to my wife and sell the LR2. I find myself still drawn to the DII, even though my is Lr3 is rock solid, I still want one badly. If I buy one with 100K miles and do the gaskets and front drives shafts. I should be able to hot 200K with regular maintenance I imagine.

Your assumption of getting another 100K mi out of that engine with head gaskets and regular maintenance is a stretch. If you put in that top hat liner block, that's a different story...but also a different price bracket. I love my 04, and it's been very reliable since the engine swap so if it's something you plan on keeping for a while, don't care if you ever get that money back from selling it and are passionate about it, welcome to the looney bin!

I'm in the same boat.

I just picked up an 04 Disco II SE for about $1,600. In amazing condition. The interior is basically like new, and the exterior has one blemish on a fender. Whole care is a 9.5/10 BUT, it's got a slipped liner.

I'm going to yank the block myself, order the top hat liners, and have the block milled and installed locally. Then rebuild the entire engine myself so that I can enjoy a long and strong life. Of course I'll have it QC'ed afterwards. I'm decent under the hood, but I don't trust myself THAT much.

What are the symptoms of the slipped liner?

Run outside the truck, if it says Discovery 2 on the back, it probably has slipped liners.
