"Run outside the truck, if it says Discovery 2 on the back, it probably has slipped liners".

Discussion forums do tend to impart the feeling that EVERY single vehicle of a particular model will develop a particular fault.

Now, if I look on Craigslist, I can see many Discovery IIs for sale, with up to 150K miles. It would therefore be reasonable to conclude that those vehicles spent a considerable proportion of those miles without blown head gaskets.

what draws you to this conclusion?
i have 133k on original block, heads, etc. and that is the bad design.
if you get a complete new block, why would think you could not get 100k out of it?

Slipped sleeves, lifters, cam, oil pump, another HG job, RMS, etc...these are all high dollar/labor jobs that are not unlikely to be needed in under 100K mi even with proper maintenance. There are certainly examples of engines which beat the odds. I wish I were wrong, but frankly, that's why this forum is so vital!

X2 - 141K miles on our original head gaskets and block.

The cooling system has to monitored and repairs made immediately. If you are losing coolant STOP driving your rover until you figure the problem. We check the coolant and oil once a week.

Another suggestion is the water pump replacement should also included the viscous fan. All the plastic coolant lines/ parts should be replace if you have over 100K miles as I just touched them to replace the battery the plastic lines were as brittle as an icicle.
