I THOUGHT I rember sometime back there was a kit that allowed you to lock a dii with a nipple, using a round push in pull out control much like you have in airplanes for choke and such. Almost like a d1 hood release. Now either its not possible and you have to use the transferase hi/Lo, and I either made this up in my head or thought I was seeing it when it was something else or it is out there

It's possible...the voices in your head weren't making things up. (LOL)

One of my friends has one on his D2. Sadly, while it sounds like a good idea in theory, if you take the truck off road you quickly discovery that the setup really stinks. This is due to the fact that you have to dis-engage it every time you shut the truck off, then re-engage it after starting the engine or you lose your traction control.

The above is probably enough of a PITA to make you do a D1 shifter, but don't forget, the pleasure of reaching under your truck to fiddle with the lever after running through deep mud and stuff like that...it should be pretty obvious why this setup isn't widely used by anyone who takes their D2 off the beaten path.

Ah I remember that, for some reason I thought I remember you also being able to bring it in cab, would that be possible? Even though if I'm willing to do all that I should just do the regular set up.

Why do you loose traction control? Is the switch that tells it it's locked in the shifter or what?

I got tired of crawling under the truck to engage and disengage my CDL so I installed a simple cable that I picked up from the auto parts shop for $8. Nothing fancy but it works. It comes in through the passenger floor pan.

Freaking awesome! I too get tired crawling underneath to engage the CDL...specific materials and instructions PLEASE! To disengage do you simply push the cable back?

So according to that, I don't have to worry about the 03 disengauged restart deal.

The cable is a heavy push/pull choke cable-pull to engage push to disengage CDL. I can't remember the brand, but up here Canadian Tire carries them in their automotive widget section. They have 2 types - get the heavier cable. I have seen the exact same cable at Advance Auto parts in the U.S.. They cost around $8 and you can cut them to whatever length you want (I think mine is 6'). McMaster Carr also show a few cable types in their catalog. I used a chuck wrench from one of my die grinders that happened to have a rectangular hole that fit on the CDL nipple as the lever, and drilled a hole on the other end to attach a nut & bolt to clamp the cable on with. The lever is about 4" long x 1.5" rise facing toward the front of the vehicle and the cable is fed through a hole in the passenger floor as seen in the photo at about 90deg to the lever. The cable is clamped down to the floor with a nut, bolt and piece of 1/8" thick aluminum. The cable loops around under the passenger seat with a generous radius and the handle which came with a mounting bracket is bolted to a riser that I mounted to the front seat anchor bolt.



This setup is pretty simple and has a low risk of failure.
