Default alternator

Just went to AutoZone and had them check my charging system.
The alternator was putting out 13.5 volts and 7 amps. And the battery was almost dead. They say I need a new alternator, where is the best place to buy one?
They want $185 for a lifetime warranty one but it doesnt come with a pulley and I do not have a impact wrench to remove the old pulley.
Any suggenstions?

What is the spec output of the alternator? I don't have the Rave cd to check on this laptop, did you verify somewhere that your output is not good enough? Batteries do tend to fail this time of year...

It is a 100 amp alternator.
I have the battery on the charger right now and am going to go back to AutoZone tommorrow with a full battery and see what happens.
I am going to check the date on the battery to try and find out how old it is once it is daylight. I to was thinking a bad battery but wouldnt the alt be putting out more amps if the battery wasnt full?
I had driven the truck 20 min before I got to AutoZone.

I read a post on the forum a while ago that said PartsGiant.com had really good prices. I looked and yeah, their prices were really good. I just went through this. What I did was buy a new brush set w/regulatorand a new rectifier assembly. They're right on the back of my alternator, easy to get to (1998 Disco I). Total cost was about $70. But figuring the time involved, probably would have been better off getting a rblt one. Mine wasn't totally dead either.

How long did it take you to rebuilt it yourself?
Rovercannabils.com has a used one for $125 plus $20 for shipping. But for $40 more I can get a lifetime warranty.
I will check out the parts giant site though.
Mine is a '97 so the alt is in the same spot as yours.

http://www.roverconnection.com/ is a good place to compare prices on alternators. Auto Zone has most places beat with their lifetime warranty.

Mike-Do you know the best way to get the pulley off with out a impact wrench? Or do I need to slip the guy at the muffler shop $10?

I've gotten one off before without an impact wrench, though I don't recall how. Probably by putting a death grip on the pulley. You will need one to get the pulley back on though, I don'tbelieve there isany other way to get it tight enough ( I found out the hard way. I would find somebody with an impact wrench).

So it sounds like slipping the guy at the muffler shop $10 is the way to go.
Thank you guys.

something to look into... not sure it will fit, but the specs are very impressive
