Default Alternator issues or?

I have a 2001 Land Rover discovery. Recently I’ve had a few issues and I’m trying to determine if it’s a alternator or not.

the LR won’t start from a cold start or if it sits after it’s jump start, if I jump the car it starts up rather quickly. If I take it off the cables I can drive it just fine but once I go to start it up the car is dead.

i had the starter replaced last year so I can’t imagine it’s the starter but I could be wrong.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I just had the same issue and just had it changed today. She would run when started but it was like it wouldn’t hold a charge. I bought a new battery first but we determined it was the alternator. The alternator has now been replaced but I’ll keep you posted.

Test voltage while not running & test voltage with it running. Without it running 11-12.9v & running 13-14.4v

Do I just hook my voltmeter to the two cables on the back of the alternator

*Best4X4 beat me to it!

Check your battery connection cables for being loose or corroded.
Depending where you live, you can get a battery and alternator check at a local auto parts store.
or
Once you jump the battery and get it started, check your battery voltage. If I remember correctly, the battery charging voltage should be about 13.6 to 14VDC.

Yep 13.4 to about 14.4 depending on accessories on/off. If it's in the 12.5v range or lower that alternator is not putting out enough of a charge to keep up with the battery drain.

"If" your battery terminals are clean along with the alternator connections and you still get low output from the alternator you can grab a 99-02 Range Rover 150AMP unit that will be 100% PNP. I've honestly had excellent luck grabbing a junk yard alternator out of a 99-02 RR P38 or a 99-04 D2. I do not grab em if they're refurb's. Most of the LR's in junk yards were either driving down the road when they were wrecked or the engine/transmission/drive shaft killed em and they were hauled off to the scrap yard. Out of probably 10 used Alternators I've bought for 25.00 only one was bad and I was able to return it and swap it out for another one for free.

I ended up having two issues. It was the alternator and the battery had a dead cell.

Yep a bad battery can kill an alternator in a heartbeat. Glad you got it fixed.
