(Alternator) Maybe a dumb question, but...

I have a 1995 Discovery. Yesterday I was listening to the truck run and could hear what sounded like worn bearings "grinding" coming from the alternator. This obviously means I'm going to need an alternator.
The question I have is, could a GM alternator ordered from Jegs.com or Summit.com work as well as a Rover specific Alternator?
Again, maybe a stupid question, but just curious if someone has done this as an alternative to the Genuine Rover Alternator (big $$).
Thanks in advance for any answers

I have heard of a couple of people that have switched to different brands of alternators, it can be done but it involves reworking the wire harnes and buying a new pulley and different belt size.
Why don't you just pull yours out and have a shop in your town rebuild it, would be alot cheaper.
