Ok, for the life of me, I can't get the stupid stop light bulb out... is there some ancient secret as to figuring this out?

So, have you removed the tail light assembly? How about the inner plate that is hels on by 6 screws? When replacing rear bulbs, do them in sets so they are all of the same brightness. Also replace any bulbs that are starting to turn black.

There is a cover on the inside that has thumb screws on it. These have to be taken off so you can pop the tail light out. Then you have access to the bulbs. You may be able to get the bulb out without taking the whole assembly out, but you have to have real long skinny fingers. It is kind of a pain, but I agree with Mike, change them out in pairs. Might even change them all out while you have the tail light out.

This is all true, of course if you are doing this on the 96 you spoke of in another post. It is a lot easier if you don't have the rear jump seats.
