Default Alternators. Where? Who? What?

What brand of alternator do you guys use? I had the battery light come on this past week and checked my charging voltage. 11.44v, so my alternator is kaput. I've searched google, and Jesus H these things can't be that expensive! Lucky8 has genuine for over $1000, that's like $1500 CDN once I pay all the taxes and such. Am I better off to go to a junkyard and pick one? Or do I take the hit and buy one from Amazon for $175? I don't even think my BMW's alternator is this expensive lol

You can get a Bosch used for $240 + $20 shipping from amazon (not sure what that is in CND $)

Bosch AL0807N Alternator

otherwise, I would say take the hit and get the cheaper version from Amazon.

I got a 2000-2002 Range Rover P38 150AMP Alternator off Ebay for 134.00 with free shipping from parts player (I researched them) and they had the best ratings. Alternator showed up and looked just as good if not better than the OEM unit that had died. Very well painted, 100% exact match on the connections, and it's been installed for a year now with zero issues.

I'm even running a 70.00 Ebay unit in my LR3 without any issues either. In the LR3 I agreed with my LR Buddy due to it's location down at the bottom it doesn't matter if it's 500.00 or 50.00 water and the elements are it's #1 enemy. It's been almost a year with that unit as well and zero issues or Can Bus issues (like I had with the OEM unit due to low voltages).

You can get them at Auto Zone for around 250.00, but you've got to give them your old one as a core, and some times depending on the auto store you "might" have to keep your old pulley.

Problem with this one is, it's still going to cost me about $350 CDN once I have it shipped here. I'm not spending that kinda cash to wait for a part when I can get one here for that price.

I'm headed out right now to an Alternator/Starter shop to see what they have. Hopefully I get some good news from them

So I got a brand new unit for $250 + core, got her in but am now only getting 10.6v. On the bench at the shop, it was putting out 14.4v. How is this possible?!?!

Belt slippage is the only thing I can think of, the tensioner is working as I can barely twist the belt 90 degrees, the belt itself looks good, no big cracks or little chunks missing.

What am I missing?

Check the tensioner. Often, that thing looks tight but once the engine turns, it does not give enough tension to the alternator pulley. That happened to me not too long ago. Replace the tensioner and back to 14++ volts. Other than that, some cables are loose or ground to body.
